Study aims

The two-year masters study programme Communications and Informatics in the master’s degree programme at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication (FEEC) BUT aims to educate MSc graduates with a profound theoretical understanding and practical knowledge of modern telecommunications and information technologies who are also qualified in light-current electronics and communication technology and are able to apply this knowledge in design of new appliances and systems. The core courses include subjects in theoretical and practical information technology, multimedia, communication technology and electronics.
The study of this programme can be commenced only after the students have successfully completed the bachelor’s degree programme and passed the bachelor’s final state examination, preferably in a programme oriented towards electrical engineering or information technology.
Instruction in this programme of study is ensured primarily by the Department of Telecommunications (UTKO). The offer of optional courses along with an individual semester project and the thesis enable students to focus more closely on the area of mobile and fixed communications, metallic, optical or wireless networks, modern network technology appliances, telecommunication services, multimedia, internet technologies and their services, Internet of things (IoT), smart technology, security methods and multimedia transmission. Students are also introduced to knowledge of digital filters, signal processors, multimedia signal processing and design of electronic circuits and systems. The graduates will be able to work with user interfaces, use parallel processes in operation systems and ensure security of information systems. Depending on their individual choice, students will be thoroughly acquainted with digital methods of processing and transmission of speech, sound and image signals. They will be introduced both to the design and realization of computer networks, database systems and distributed applications and diverse information technologies. In order to improve the students’ understanding of theory, courses within theoretical extension in higher Mathematics and Physics are provided. Students can also choose technical courses in other study areas in the Master’s degree programme at FEEC BUT, language and general knowledge courses.

Graduate profile

The graduate will possess detailed knowledge in the field of communication and information technologies. He is both well-provided with theoretical knowledge of communication and information systems and familiar with their design, the electronic design itself, applications, services, smart systems, Internet of Things (IoT), surveillance and measuring systems. The spectrum of his theoretical and practical knowledge embraces properties of transmitted multimedia signals and data, their processing and subsequent technical realization of communication and information systems. He is familiar with the structure and provision of various services in mobile and fixed communication and computer networks.
The graduate is qualified to solve problems of communication and information technologies. He is sufficiently knowledgeable in problems of related radio communication design, instrumentation and applications of microelectronic circuits. Thanks to the good theoretical foundations coupled with sufficiently universal education he can be expected to accommodate to all specific requirements of his future professional practice also in other areas of electronics and electrical engineering.
Graduates in this programme of MSc studies will find application in the research, development, design and operation of challenging communication and information technologies. They can participate in the development of new generations of services in classical and mobile communication and computer networks. In addition to their technical knowledge of problems, they will be prepared to perform higher executive and managerial functions. Their sufficient theoretical education provides the required basis for possible enlargement of their knowledge in doctoral studies.

Profession characteristics

According to surveys, graduates of the information programs in the labour market are the most demanded and have no problems with exercise, graduates of MPC-TIT are very wanted preferred. They can usually choose from many offers and the employer's interest is also an above-average financial valuation. Graduates also often choose their own business, they have appropriate education for it. Employers and practice generally appreciate practical knowledge with deeper theoretical foundations of modern telecommunications and information technologies, including the use of knowledge of light current electronics and communications technology in designing new devices or systems. Graduates offer knowledge of mobile and fixed communications, metallic, optical or wireless networks, means of modern network technologies, telecommunication services, multimedia, internet technologies, including Internet of Things, smart technologies and generally Industry 4.0, security methods and multimedia transmissions. Graduates are ready to meet current labour market requirements in the field of telecommunication and information technology

Study plan creation

Study plans correspond to fast development of telecommunications and information technology.
Courses are evaluated according to ECTS credits. The credit expresses an approximate weekly student's workload for the course. Credits for a given course are obtained after the prescribed completion, i.e. after awarding a credit, classified credit, or by passing an exam under the conditions of the BUT Rules of Study and Examination, the internal standard of the Rules for Organization of Studies at FEEC and the composition and content individually defined in each course.
In a two-year master study, the student must earn at least 120 credits in the specified credit composition:
57 credits in compulsory courses,
54 credits in compulsory elective (PV) courses,
9 credits in elective courses,

Obligatory courses are usually completed by the student in semesters and years as stated in the curriculum. If a student fails to complete a compulsory course in the prescribed manner, he / she must register it again in the following year of his / her studies.
Compulsory elective courses of profiling fundamentals (PVA) are field-oriented professional courses that profile the student into narrower areas of his / her interests.
Other compulsory (PVB) courses are other professional courses included in the offers of the departments of FEEC BUT. Their goal is to extend students' professional knowledge.
The student chooses to select PV courses in individual semesters so that at the end of his / her bachelor's degree he / she has at least the prescribed minimum of credits in each group of PV courses, while not obtaining the minimum number of credits in one group of PV courses cannot be compensated by exceeding the number of credits obtained in another group of PV courses.
Elective courses extend the general knowledge of students. Courses are chosen by the student himself or herself from a full-faculty offer (FEEC departments) or from the other faculties of VUT (so-called free courses) and can pass them in any year or semester of master study. Elective courses include Physical Education. If a student has not successfully completed an elective course, he / she may or may not write another academic year in the next academic year.
Students must obtain the corresponding electrotechnic qualification at the beginning of their study. Students who begin their study in the year 2020/21 and later, have to fulfil one subject in English for successful study graduation, according to the Guideline BUT To education of foreign languages.

Availability for the disabled

All lecture rooms at the FEEC BUT allow disabled access; students, however, must meet the medical standards to acquire the necessary electrotechnical qualifications. In laboratory classes and practicals, students are required to independently operate measuring instruments and related equipment without endangering human health or damaging property.

What degree programme types may have preceded

The graduates may continue in a doctoral study programme.
