Course detail

Modern network technologies

FEKT-DTK1Acad. year: 2017/2018

The course Modern Network Technologies covers areas of telecommunications and data networks, but it focuses specially on latest parts of this area. Course content is divided into three parts. First part is devoted to revision of fundamental terms used in the area of telecommunications, then layer architecture of data network is discussed and then media access methods, switching and routing techniques are went through. The second part is devoted the most widespread data network technology – Ethernet, especially to new trends in the area of Ethernet robustness, network virtualization and to penetration of the Ethernet into the areas of access network and wide area networks. Also older and less known network technologies like Token Ring, FDDI and DQDB. Techniques for QoS support at various levels of network layer model are discussed. Wireless data networks standardized by groups of standards IEEE 802.11 are next area that is went through. Description of network services and higher layer protocols is focused on TCP/IP protocol stack, multimedia services provision technologies and modern mobile network technologies are discussed in the third part.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Obtention of wide view of the area of modern network technologies with more detailed focus on the areas of network layer models, media access methods and routing techniques. The course also includes information about quality of service support, multicast data transport and about wireless transmission technologies.
