Issued topics of Doctoral Study Program

2. round (podání přihlášek od 18.10.2018 do 10.12.2018)

  1. Behaviour of emerging micropollutants in denitrifying bioreactors

The dissertation will be aimed at the research on the behaviour of selected emerging micropollutants (pesticides and/or veterinary antibiotics) in laboratory denitrifying bioreactors. The goal is to elucidate whether the reaction conditions fostering denitrification are suitable for the biodegradation of emerging micropollutants and whether these compounds affect the bioreactor main function, i.e. denitrification efficiency.

Tutor: Malá Jitka, doc. Ing., Ph.D.

  2. Design of the pulse dischargers technology for vertical filters with vegetation

The constructed wetlands of new generations are currently experiencing revitalization - it turns out almost three decades have gone in the wrong direction. Current new filtering systems only function properly when properly designed and implemented pulse wiring. The principle of pulse operation is strongly dependent on a drain element operated without electricity and without human service. However, there is a lack of description of the device on the hydraulic side, detailed testing and definition of the required characteristics. The dissertation would compare available devices and evaluate what devices fit for the type of filter.

    Tutor: Kriška-Dunajský Michal, Ing., Ph.D.

  6. Failure of embankment dams due to overtopping - domino effect

The aim of the thesis is to propose and validate a methodology for solving the problem of failure of embankment dams due to overtopping. The proposed methodology will include an evaluation of dams in the system of water works, eventually additional cross section structures (e.g. road embankments), in the catchment area and the proposal to minimize the probability of domino effect.

Tutor: Jandora Jan, doc. Ing., Ph.D.

  7. Influence of surface tension on overflow

The water overflow with a relatively thin or narrow overflow nappe is influenced by surface tension and friction that occur simultaneously. Both effects can not be separated when using the same liquid with the same surface tension. In some cases, water may contain surfactants that change the surface tension value. Change of surface tension influence the discharge characteristics of weir. The aim of this doctoral thesis is to quantify the influence of surface tension independently by a series of measurements of overflow with water of different surface tensions. The benefit of the work will be in the determination of the effect of the surface tension on the overflow, thus increase accuracy of the discharge coefficient.

Tutor: Hlavínek Petr, prof. Ing., CSc., MBA

  9. Sediment abrasion

Sediment abrasion is caused by mutual contact between two particles, which produces an at least one other particle. The result of the abrasion is to increase the number of particles and reduce their size. Downstream fining of sediment particles is caused by abrasion, sedimentation, entrainment, particle sorting, geometric changes of the channel and changes of discharge. The aim of the doctoral thesis is to determine the characteristics of the abrasion by means of laboratory experiments. The verification will be done by long-term simulation of the sediment transport with abrasion at the selected river. The benefit of the work will be in include the abrasion characteristics to the sediment transport models, thus significantly increasing their accuracy.
