A Survey of International History of Art of the 20th Century - after 1945

The lecture provides with the overview of art movements, tendencies and personalities mainly in the areas of painting and sculpture in the second and third decades of the 20th century in Europe and the USA. Expressive, dadaistic and surrealistic tendencies. The phenomenon of "Parisian School". Art deco, art of dictatorships.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Credit: test.
Exam: interview (oral exam) reflecting unmarked pictorial material which students ought to categorize, characterize and - if possible - specify other artworks of the given artist.

Course curriculum

1. Constructivist tendencies, phenomenon Bauhaus, kinetic art, Russian avant-garde.
2. Dadaism, surrealism, their spreading and influence.
3. "Parisian School".
4. Expressive tendencies between the world wars, "Neue Sachlichkeit".
5. Neo-classicism, art deco, art of dictatorships - Italy, Germany, USSR.
