The primary aim is to make the students, already in the first year, acquainted with the trends, directions, personalities and examples of architecture, so that they are able to react on the studio consultations, and to orientate themselves in the contemporary world and domestic architectural design. Since the history of architecture is taught in chronological sequence, there is a considerable discrepancy between the lectures on history of architecture and the references to contemporary design.
Learning outcomes of the course unit
After having completed this subject, the student should orientate himself in the basic terms relating to 20th century's architecture, and have a grasp of current situation in Czech and foreign architecture.
Since the teaching concerns the first semester of the first year, the knowledge is very mixed, depending on the type of school from which the student came. Expected is the interest in the discipline, corresponding reading of journals, watching of internet and other activities, such as seeing exhibitions, attendance of seminars and lectures, watching TV programs relating to the discipline.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.
Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes
The subject is taught in form of 2-hours lectures given once a week, and is concluded by a written examination, without credit. The axamination consists of a first part proving the student's knowledge. He or she has to name a known building's designer, function and location. The matter is a significant work of Czech or foreign architecture. The second part of the examination consists in a written description of a concrete architectural style period or trend, country or lacation, emphasis being put on an acompanying drawing.
Language of instruction
Students should gain a general grasp of trends, directions, personalities and significant works of contemporary architecture, so as to be able to react to studio assignments and references on selected contemporary buildings. Orientation in this discipline should facilitate the students' communication with the teachers of studio subjects.
Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences
Since attendance of lectures is not obligatory, it is up to the student, to which extent he or she will take the advantage of attending lectures or studying individually, or possibly, using the notes of colleagues who attend the lectures. Since the examination is focussed on examples that have been delt with in the lectures, it is recommendable to attend the lectures.
