General English II

FCH-BCV_AOB2Acad. year: 2008/2009

Basic grammatical phenomena: passive voice, gerund, countable and uncountable nouns, relative clauses, comparatives and superlatives, modal verbs and definite and indefinite articles - more comlicated cases. Extension of vocabulary, use of dictionary, reading techniques, writing, listening. Conversational topics: description of things, human health, traffic, hobbies, leisure, sports.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Development of writing and speaking skills and understanding to written and oral language with the emphasize on reading techniques; grammar and vocabulary necessary for entering the English for Chemists course.

Prerequisites

Lessons 1.-4. in the New Hotline Pre-Intermediate textbook by T. Hutchinson.Present simple and continuous, past simple and continuous, present perfect simple and continuous, past perfect simple tenses. Conditional clauses I. Reading skills development, writing essays, listening skills and speaking/conversation on the following topics:" Meeting people, family, everyday situations, human personality, clothes, ..." related to the above lessons.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Conditions for awarding the graded course-unit credit: active participation in lessons, for the students with English mastered at levels higher than the General English II one absence from seminars can be compensated by successful completion of final test. Students will submit essays on assessed topics.
Marks are awarded based on students ' performance in final test and short oral discussion on a topic discussed in lessons

Course curriculum

Lessons 5.-9. in New Hotline Pre-Intermediate textbook: passive voice, gerund, comparatives and superlatives, relative clauses, modal verbs - to be able to, to have to, description of things. Reading, writing essays (Holiday/Adventures), listening and speaking (description of things, human health, traffic, hobbies, leisure, sports) in the course of semester.

Aims

Extension of vocabulary, grammar knowledge, development of reading, writing, listening and conversation to the level necessary for entering the "English for Chemists" course

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Students hand in individually completed tasks and exercises according to the subject syllabus. They write an essay on an assigned topic.Attendance at organized seminars is systematically controlled, for the students with English mastered at levels higher than the General English II absences at seminars can be compensated by successful completion of the final test.
