English for Special Purposes I

Effective use of supporting aids/tools (dictionaries, concordancers, glossaries), vocabulary - general, analytical, organic, inorganic and physical chemistry, inorganic and organic nomenclature, laboratory equipment, mathematical expressions, writing instructions, effective reading and listening I, relevant oral skills and presentation I, grammar in technical texts.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

General grammar and vocabulary for the field of chemistry, dictionary and supporting aids (e.g. glossaries) skills, the basics of effective reading and listening skills, oral presentation, writing instructions

Prerequisites

Proper writing and speaking skills, understanding written and oral language with the emphasize on reading techniques; grammar and vocabulary, all the above at level necessary for entering the English for Chemists course ( at least pre-inermediate level).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Active participation in lessons, credit test with proper results, delivery of an oral presentation on a selected topic according to the branch of chemistry studied, completion of individual tasks assigned in seminars.

Course curriculum

Supporting aids I (electronic and printed dictionaries), techniques for development of vocabulary, matter and states of matter, laboratory equipment, gerunds, halogens - their physical, chemical properties and use, passive voice, acids, bases and salts, process verbs,inorganic and organic nomenclature and basic phrases, present simple in technical texts, mathematical expressions and statistics

Aims

The aim of the course is to develop the basic vocabulary and grammar used in the field of chemistry, to show the students how to use supporting aids (printed and electronic dictionaries, glossaries etc), the basics of effective reading and listening techniques, oral and written communication in the field

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Students hand in individually completed tasks and exercises according to the subject syllabus. They also deliver a presentation on a subject focused topic. Attendance at organized seminars is systematically controlled, absences at seminars can be compensated by successful delivery of another presentation.
