English for Special Purposes II

Vocabulary - analytical chemistry, biochemistry, environment protection, IT, vocabulary according to branches studied;
writing: abstracts, CVs, business letters, technical texts; effective reading and listening II, relevant oral skills including discussion and presentation II, grammar in technical texts II, SVOMPT , technical texts - phrases, structure, syntax, individual work with special/technical texts (reading, speaking). Conversion of word classes, compound terms, word formation - suffixes, prefixes.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students are both able to understand chemical and technical texts and to perform basic oral and written communication in English in the above fields. They are also able to deliver a short presentation on a selected topic from the branch of chemistry they study.

Prerequisites

English grammar, vocabulary, writing, reading, listening and speaking skills developed in the course "English for Chemists I"

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

For successful passing the exam the following conditions should be fulfilled: during the semester students participate actively in lessons, they deliver one presentation on a selected topic according to the branch of chemistry they study and they also prepare their own list of vocabulary accordingly. The exam consists of written and oral parts. In the written one students show knowledge of special vocabulary, grammar, dictionary skills, structural aspects of technically focused texts and relevant language skills (writing, reading, translation). In the oral part they discuss the content of a chemistry focused journal article they chose. This way they demonstrate achieved level of reading and speaking skills for special purposes that are also necessary for successful mastering of bibliographic search for their theses and relevant oral communication in-service.

Aims

The aim of the course is to extend ESP vocabulary according to individual branches of chemistry. Reading, writing, listening and speaking skills and ESP grammar knowledge are also developed as well as the skills necessary for teacher-independent work with special texts. The life-long education techniques are employed so as the students can manage language aspects of both theses and professional communication in-service.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Students hand in individually completed tasks and exercises according to the subject syllabus. They also deliver a presentation on a subject focused topic. Attendance at organized seminars is systematically controlled, absences at seminars can be compensated by successful delivery of another presentation.
