Principles of additive manufacturing

CEITEC VUT-DS122Acad. year: 2023/2024

The bases, advantages and drawbacks of additive manufacturing, together with its social and economic impact, will be reviewed in this course. The student will learn how to control the interplay between materials, devices for fabrication and software for a successful development of a product. Four of the most spread additive manufacturing technologies will be revised in detail, including fused deposition modelling, direct ink writing, selective laser melting and stereolithography. The materials requirements, processing principles and conditions, accuracy, commune defects and properties of parts obtained will be discussed for each technology. Students will have the opportunity of in silicon design one object and built it layer by layer using either fused deposition modelling or direct ink writing technique. Last but not least, the concept of biofabrication and 3D-bioprinting, with high potential for the fabrication of human tissues and organs, will be introduced

Language of instruction

English

Entry knowledge

Knowledge of materials science, polymers, metals and ceramics. Basic concepts of traditional material processing

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

The course consist in several lectures that may be face-to-face or virtual. In each lecture one topic is reviewed by one student and the topic is discussed in group. At the end of the course each student provides its written feedback. The assessment of the course depends on the quality of the presentation, the active participation in all the lectures and the submission of the feedback on time.
