Application of Electric Drives

The course introduces the functional principles of electric drives and control systems. Students shall gain practical experience with design of control systems based on Arduino boards and PLC from B&R company. Students become familiar with designing the control system in open and closed loop.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Skills obtained in this course shall enable to gain overview in the field of electric drives control systems design. Students should be able to select appropriate electric drive for given application and to specify requirements for control system after passing the course. Students should also be able to program a control loop for simple systems.

Prerequisites

Knowledge at undergraduate level in physics, mathematics and electro technic is assumed.

The course will be taught in a form of lectures including laboratory exercises.

Necessary condition for passing the course is attendance and participation in laboratory exercises and completing the given tasks.

Introducing the basic features and control possibilities of electric drives

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Participation in laboratory exercises is compulsory. Compensation of missed lessons depends on the instructions of course supervisor.

Syllabus

1.-2. Division of control systems, safety of control systems, inputs, outputs of control systems, on-line supervision, control loop, division of electric drives.
3.-4. Arduino – programming the digital inputs and outputs, analog inputs, use of the display based on HD44780 driver, output to the console.
5.-6. Arduino – Programming the control loop using analog sensor and PWM output.
7.-8. Arduino – Controlling the stepper motors and servo motors.
9.-10. Arduino – Measuring of acceleration using digital sensor with I2C or SPI bus.
11.-12. Arduino – interrupts and timers
13. -14. Introducing the design and production of printed circuit boards. Possibilities and practical use of frequency drive inverters.
15.-16. Typical application and program architecture of programmable logic controllers, integrated development environment.
17.-18. Identification, connecting and recovery of real PLC in B&R Automation Studio.
19. – 20. Use of operator panel of connected PLC.
21.-22. Examples of simple HW applications according to the connected IO cards.
