Leadership of Diverse Teams

The course will provide the students with specific additional knowledge and skills concerning personal management focusing on the leadership of diversified teams.
Study of this course will enhance the students' knowledge and skills mostly in the following fields: leadership of human resources, team leadership, social diversity, diversity measurement, methods and techniques of diversity management and leadership, intercultural management, gender management, diversity management, work-life balance.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The course aims to provide the students with the basic theoretical background to be applied to practical leadership of diversified teams, a highly topical issue. The course also provides space for personal experience and training of managerial skills using case studies and analysing best practice example.

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Conditions for awarding the course-unit credit:
1. Attendance at lectures and seminars.
2. Individual preparing for lectures and seminars.
3. Cooperation in lectures and seminars.

The conditions of successful graduation of this course are oral presentation and a written elaborate handed in therm.

Course curriculum

Outline of the course syllabus
1. Introduction to the course. Basic definitions and concepts, main topics and relationships between them, overview of the basis and recommended study literature, requirements for successfully completing the course, overview of basic terminology.
2. Leadership a management of diversified teams in global environment. Theory of economic development by R. Florida.
3. Social diversity in organisations. Basic terminology, diversity at an individual level, diversity at a group level, diversity at an organisational level. Measuring diversity. Diversity management.
4. Intercultural management and gender management. Intersectionality. Specific problems of foreign nationals working in this country, expatriates, brain drain, brain gain, gender quotas, equal opportunities.
5. Age management. Terminology, theoretical approaches, research in age management, myths about older employees, multi-generation teams, outlooks of age management.
6. Work-life balance issues. Part-time jobs, company kindergartens, flexible working hours, work from home, shared jobs, win-win strategies. Best practice examples.

Aims

The course objective is to give the students an overview of issues related to the personal management of diversified teams in enterprises and organisations in a global perspective. The focus is on defining the basic notions, theoretical concepts, research approaches as well as on applying the knowledge gained to dealing with the practical problems of personal managers. Best practice examples are demonstrated as part of the course syllabus.
