System of Quality Assurance and ISO Standards

General aspects of quality of products and services, quality attributes, procedural approaches, customer, responsibility for product, certification of products, laws related to quality assurance systems in the Czech Republic and in the European Union, the processes of international standardisation. The policy and system of quality assurance in chemical laboratories, the items of quality system in testing laboratories, requirements for technical capability, accreditation in testing laboratories, evaluation criteria and related rules. Methods of quality management in laboratory; yield, blank tests, repeatability and regulatory diagrams, documentation and validation of methods, operation characteristics, order of analyses, calibration procedures, reference materials, expression of uncertainties

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Acquisition of knowledge sufficient for implementation of quality systems in analytical laboratories and for the use of ISO norms in the field of quality and also in the field of determination of selected analytes

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Graded credit-course unit will be given on the base of elaboration of semester work and its succesfull defence.

Course curriculum


1. General aspects of quality concept
2. EU and Czech laws concerning quality systems, processes of international standardisation
3.. Quality policy and quality system in chemical laboratories
4. General terms related to measurement and results of tests (analyses) and quality control; elements of quality system in testing laboratories, requirements for system
5. Elements of quality system and methods of quality control in testing laboratories, technical eligibility requirements, accreditation in testing laboratories
6. Inter-laboratory comparison of tests, eligibility tests (ISA/AOAC/IUPAC); evaluation and interpretation of data; laboratory information system LIMS
7. Quality systems applied for sampling of abiotic and biotic matrixes

Familiarisation with both quality systems that are being implemented now and with effective ISO norms.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Elaboration of seminar project on given topic from the problematic of quality systems
Presentation of this work and its succsesfull defence
