The use of generative AI at Brno University of Technology

Preamble

Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that is capable of generating text, images, sounds or other media formats based on a user-specified request. Generative AI models learn patterns and data structures using neural network machine learning techniques, based on which they generate new data with similar properties in specified logical contexts.

University Statement

Brno University of Technology understands generative AI as a technology that can be useful solely as an assistive and consultative tool. As part of this determination, Brno University of Technology supports an open approach to the use of generative AI tools, but also sets out principles and recommendations to guide the use of this technology.

Basic Principles

1. Legality

Generative AI tools may be used only where it does not contradict generally binding legal regulations and internal standards of Brno University of Technology.

2. Responsibility and verification

Responsibility for any damage or other negative consequences that may be caused by generative AI tools rests with the user.

In order to avoid undesirable consequences of the outputs of generative AI tools, the user is responsible for rigorously verifying the reliability of their outputs: their correctness, truthfulness, and safety.

3. Transparency

Generative AI is a supporting tool, not a technology intended to be used directly for research, development, artistic and other creative activities, nor a tool to be used to fulfil learning obligations.

Where any result has been achieved using generative AI, it is the responsibility of the user to properly disclose this fact in accordance with the citation rules for information sources, including the extent to which generative AI has been used.

Incorrect or unacknowledged use of generative AI may be considered a breach of ethical principles in the sense of ghost-writing or contract-cheating.

4. Development and innovation

The use of generative AI tools is primarily intended to contribute to development, innovation and the search for solutions to improve the quality of life, sustainability and to address current societal needs and issues in accordance with applicable value, moral and legal societal principles.

5. Learning and copyright protection

The eligibility, manner and extent of use of generative AI tools is subject to the contractual terms and conditions set by their providers and may be subject to copyright, which the user is responsible for respecting.

The user is responsible for the legitimacy and consequences of the use of the information and data entrusted to the generative AI tools.

6. Protection of privacy and trade secrets

When using generative AI tools, the principles of privacy and trade secret protection must be observed and the misuse of the information provided must be prevented.

Before providing data to generative AI tools, the terms of the guarantee provided to protect the data entered must be verified.

Generative AI tools must not be provided with non-public information relating to activities and their results where the Brno University of Technology is contractually obliged to protect the rights and know-how of third parties.

7. Ethical use

Generative AI tools and their outputs must be used in accordance with the general ethical principles and principles contained in the Code of Ethics of Brno University of Technology.

8. Education and training

Effective use of generative AI tools and understanding of the potential and risks requires education and training of users in order to eliminate possible adverse effects.
