What made you decide to study in the Czech Republic / Brno?Hello, I am Nelson from the Republic of Kenya. I am a Ph.D. student at the Faculty of Information Technology (FIT) at the Brno University of Technology (BUT). BUT is a renowned University in Europe and the biggest technical University in the Czech Republic. The quality of education is excellent with modern laboratory equipment and organised in a way that promotes teamwork and critical thinking. The first time I stepped foot on Czech Republic soil, I was on an Erasmus students exchange program while pursuing my master’s programme in Information Systems Security. I fell in love with the country and decided to start my Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering at Brno University of Technology. Besides the fact that Czech Republic is in the heart of Europe and Brno being the center of connection to other cities in the neighboring countries, Brno University of Technology offered me a program that I wished to study for my career development. What do you love most about Brno?Brno is known to be a students’ city. It has a lot of foreign students and a lot of activities. The city itself is nice with nice places to visit e.g., art galleries, museums, planetarium, a lake, several parks, a zoo etc. Transport is cheap with students’ discounts that allow you to freely travel not just through the city of Brno but the whole of the Czech Republic and other European countries. One other thing I love about this city is the availability of work. A study permit also allows you to work and you can easily find part-time/full-time jobs or Internships both during the semester and during holidays with good pay. Brno has been my second home for almost 2 years now and I’m enjoying every day of it.What advice would you give to new students?I know it is not an easy decision to study away from home but taking that risk and taking up studying at Brno could be best decision that you will ever make. This is a new world that will open you up to new thinking and at the same time offer you job opportunities while pursuing your studies. I would like to encourage those who wish to study at Brno University of Technology to apply as soon as possible and they will never regret it. Once in Brno, find some hobbies that engage you within the city. Studying is obviously the priority, but beyond it, living in another country is an amazing opportunity and you should make good use of it to create memories. I will conclude by a quote from Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
