My experience in Brno and CEITEC
Hi everyone! I am Jorge, from Colombia. I would like to share with you my experience in Brno, and hopefully, convince you that this city is a great place for your studies. To tell you a little bit about myself, I studied physics in my home country, and currently, I am in the third year of my doctoral studies in the program “Advanced Materials and Nanosciences” at CEITEC. In there, I investigate the magnetic and electronic properties of two-dimensional materials.
The first time I heard of Brno was when I lived in Prague. Before starting my doctoral studies, I worked for one year in the private sector of the Czech capital. This gave me a glimpse of the dynamic economic activity of the Czech Republic, where skilled workers are highly sought after, not only in Prague, but also in the country in general. Since one of my dreams was to finish my physics studies, I decided to look for a doctoral position. During my search, a friend recommended to me CEITEC in Brno, a suggestion that I will always be grateful for, because I found and was accepted to a position in the topic I am really interested in.
After nearly three years of studying and working at CEITEC, I am still amazed by the great opportunities it offers, such as, experienced scientists, world-class equipment, high-quality research outputs in different fields, supportive and international environment, modern infrastructure, and many more. Furthermore, CEITEC collaborates with many international institutes. For instance, I was very fortunate to go on an internship to a leading institution in graphene research, located in Manchester, U.K.; and my group has collaborations with research groups in the U.S.A., France, Italy, Poland, Morocco, Germany, and Brazil. In short, CEITEC (and I believe that other universities in Brno as well) is very well-connected within the global research network.
In my opinion, several reasons make Brno a great place to live. I have been enjoying its vibrant cultural life, high number of pubs and restaurants, several places for practicing sports, and international environment. On more practical terms, Brno is located strategically within Europe, being near several European capitals (Vienna, Prague, Bratislava, Budapest); moreover, its industry and technology enjoy economic growth. This gives you great opportunities to find a job after completing your studies. In conclusion, I cannot recommend Brno enough. I really hope that more people get to discover this “hidden Czech gem”.
