Predicting of soil stress - strain behaviour is a complex and demanding task. New and more sophisticated material models are being developed and applied in design practice. Calibrations of input parameters values therefore present a time-consuming task. The efficiency of this process can be increased by using optimization techniques. Application of such methods is however still rare in geotechnical engineering. Complex analysis and comparisons of individual methods are not available. Each technique also requires individual settings of parameters governing optimization process which is problem dependent. The need for application research in this area is therefore justified. Theoretical analysis and comparisons of methods will be performed in the first part of the thesis. Chosen methods will be then automatized and connected with finite element models. Efficiency of each technique, its initial settings and sensitivity will be examined in series of numerical back analysis (simulated experiments, laboratory tests, instrumented constructions) and by applying various material models.
