The ability of the doctoral student of an independent scientific work on the selected topic, familiarity with scientific work methodology, especially the problem analysis and synthesis of the findings and its creative application in the proposed solution.

The graduate is ready for an independent scientific and research work in the field of architecture and urban design theory, is able to solve practical problems in the field of architecture and urban design independently and at a scientific level, publishes outcomes of both practical and theoretical activities, also in any of the world languages, is able to teach at a higher-education institution.

Entry requirements

The master degree qualification in the branch of architecture or similar achieved at a higher-education institution in the Czech Republic or a school of architecture abroad.
Passing successfully the admission examination during which the applicant proves his/her interest and expert knowledge for a research work.

  1. Causes and consequences of development architectural styles and architectural ideas, their influence on the form of our seats from the middle ages to the present

    Comparing and studying principles, causes and spread of new architectural styles, architectural ideas in the Central European cultural space from history to the present. The aim of the dissertation is examining the effects of social development and transformation of urban design principles to design and method of formation of our settlements.

  2. Contemporary transformation of the Czech countryside

    Czech countryside is currently undergoing a number of changes, related the continuing urbanization. Work will focus on evaluation of the historical and contemporary development of rural settlemests with us and outline their options for sustainable development with an emphasis on preservation of cultural, spatial and landscape values.

  3. MOTHERLAND | HEIMAT: Villages, landscape and generational memory of the Moravian - Austrian border

    Annotation: The study deals with legacy of rich cultural heritage of villages and landscape which is strongly inscribed into cultural landscape of South Moravian borderland. Target of the research: The target of thesis is identification, mapping and description of the structure formation of the villages and landscape border area of South Moravia and Lower Austria, focusing on the period after 1918 due to changes in the political organization and population structure. The thesis will be connected with project NAKI DF13P01OVV019 and possibly its continuation. Assumption phases of thesis: 1. Analysis of initial situation - a description of the development of villages in the border area with focus on the differences on both sides of the border due to political and population continuity. 2. Synthesis of the gained data for selected areas. 3. Application of the research results for selected areas. The outcome of the work will be a description of recovery strategy and the development of rural landscape in the context of the above described valuable components (case study).

  4. Open public data in urban planning

    The development of open civic society through open access to data governance and geoinformation opens up the potential to improve the quality of life in cities and for sustainable urban development.

  5. Rural public space

    The focus of the thesis is on analyzing rural public space and testing a new approach to its organization and functioning based on taking account of the changing needs of rural population, preserving at the same time the specificities of rural areas in the Czech Republic.

  6. Smart cities – new urban strategy and tactics in urban planning

    The current urban strategies and tactics SMART CITIES, based on the principles of sustainability and have been successfully applied in many European cities. Comparison of these successful models in selected cities of central Europe and their evaluation will be examined. The aim of the dissertation is generally to establish the conditions for the real application of similar strategies and tactics for cities in the country.

  7. The city development in public and developers interest

    The contemporary cities development is side by side affected by public and business, developers interest. Many contemporary projects reflect real as well as supposed conflicts. It is desirable to identify, describe, alternatively eliminate or harmonize these conflicts.

  8. The traditional model of settlement development and its evaluation

    Reflection on current scientific knowledge in terms of their influence on the transformation of the traditional model of the formation and development of settlements. Relationship development of settlement to society and to the landscape with respect to changes of climatic conditions.

  9. The transformations of trade fair and exhibiton centres in Europe

    Trade fair and exhibiton districts underwent in past many alternations of their form and function. Now the task is to find the form and function appropriate to the (smart) city of today while foreseeing the future needs of exhibiton industry.

  10. The typology of the contemporary city and the village

    Pluralism of post-modern period, globalization and purposes of sustainable development bring new requirements into our city organisation and our settlement of country-side. Do our settlements and their traditional compositional elements comply with the needs of the near future? Is the corresponding form compact city or garden city?

  11. Transformation of pedestrian zones in Europe

    Pedestrian zones and their functional structure underwent in past through many different forms and functions. The task is to find and determine prerequisite for well functioning form of pedestrian zones appropriate to the city of today while foreseeing the future needs of city transportation.

  12. Transformation of the residential areas

    The existential function of a city is housing. People live when experiencing their own environment meaningful, when they are identifying with it and are able to orient themselves within. Housing therefore means more than just a shelter, including the fact that spaces in which life exists are the „places“ in the true sense (CH. N-Schulz). The topic consists of an analysis of new forms of organization of residential areas in contemporary cities with regard to meeting the current environmental and social needs and the influence on future cities development.
