The aim of the studies is to prepare top-class scientific personalities that will be able to provide solution to challenging problems of science and technology in the field of information technologies in telecommunications. Another aim is to teach graduates the methods of scientific work, to make their knowledge of higher mathematics and physics more profound, and to furnish students with theoretical, experimental and practical knowledge from the field of teleinformatics.

Graduates of doctoral studies in the field of teleinformatics are fit to work as scientific and research workers in the development, design and operation departments of research and development institutes, and telecommunications companies, where they can make full creative use of their knowledge and skills.

This field of study focuses on the science education of doctoral students with profound theoretical foundations in converging communication and in formation technologies. The main part of the study includes course in theoretical informatics and telecommunication technology. In the area of teleinformatics the student has much knowledge of communication and information technologies, data transmissions and their security, inclusive of using and designing the related software. He is well versed in operating systems, computer languages, database systems, distributed applications and the like. He can cope with the algorithmization of tasks on a high level and can propose new technological solutions of telecommunication devices, information systems and support services.

  1. Adaptive speech enhancement using sound intensive probe

    The studying of the properties of sound intensity probe, which is also used for localization of sound source, will be first step. The research of the adaptive noise cancellation (ANC) algorithm used in two-channel speech enhancement systems will be the next step. The purpose is to design and test a new adaptive algorithm, which partially utilizing the directional properties of the sound intensity probe for speech quality enhancement.

  2. Advanced steganography methods

    The goal of the dissertation thesis is to design an effective steganography method which will be practically undetectable by current detection methods and which will be sufficiently robust to withstand the modifications produced by a censor.

  3. Analog electronic circuits containing elements with the fractional order

    The thesis is focused on modeling, simulations and experimental verification of structures where relation between response and driving signal contains derivation or integration of non-integer order (so-called fractional structures or circuits). The task is also to design of suitable application possibilities of fractional order circuits, e.g. frequency filters, reconfigurable filters and tunable oscillators. Attention should be kept also on other ways how to implement fractional order circuits, e.g. implementation of structures with distributed parameters (RC-EDP).

  4. Analysis of brain structural and perfusion image data

    This PhD work will focus on the development of current segmentation methods for the analysis of magnetic resonance tomography images. Based on literature search suitable segmentation method will be selected and used for the analysis of images from the database of investigated patients with brain disease. Subsequently research in pathological tissues in structural, perfusion, diffusion, or other images will be performed. The topic will be solved in collaboration with FN Bohunice.

  5. Analysis of control procedures in new generation mobile networks

    Today we are witnesses of massive deployment of fourth generation mobile networks. The scope of the Ph.D. thesis is the study and consecutive analysis of control procedures (signalling) both in the experimental network at UTKO and also in real mobile networks, the research of causes of unsuccessful or time consuming procedures and the design of techniques for problem localization and for a mobile network optimization.

  6. Analysis of movement and cognitive disorders in patients with neurodegenerative diseases based on processing the digitized text

    Neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's or Alzheimer's disease can be diagnosed using various clinical, genetic and paraclinical tests. Among paraclinical methods there is an analysis of digitized handwritings. Thanks to digitizing tablets the dynamics of movement, pressure on the pen tip, tilt, azimuth etc. can be properly quantify. The cognitive function can be also quantify indirectly (it is possible to observe the movement of the hand at the moment it is not writing). These parameterization methods allow to describe various clinical symptoms of neurodegenerative diseases, such as tremor, micrographs, slow strokes, cognitive deficit, poor spatial orientation, etc. The aim of this doctoral thesis is to design methods for processing digitized handwriting/handdrawing, through which it would be possible to assess neurodegenerative diseases (especially Parkinson's disease and dementia), diagnose them and monitor the progression of them in time.

  7. Box Particle Techniques

    The particle filter is a computationally feasible technique for sequential Bayesian estimation in arbitrary nonlinear/non-Gaussian scenarios. The box particle filter is a recent variant of the particle filter with significantly reduced complexity. The goal of this thesis is to develop a distributed version of the box particle filter, and to investigate the application of box particle techniques to belief propagation message passing and/or to Bayesian filters based on random finite sets, such as the PHD filter or the multi-Bernoulli filter.

    Cloud services are a modern technology that, for example, allows data storage on the Internet without restriction to a specific server. With distributed systems, a number issues are to be solved, such as the server distribution for the data storage, backuping and restoring the data, users' privacy assurance, scalability, and data availability.

  9. Communication Platform for M2M Services in 5G Mobile Networks

    Current mobile networks have to already face a significant increase of specific type of data traffic generated by automated devices and systems without human interaction. This type of mobile data will be even more dominant in future generations of mobile networks such as 4G or 5G networks. For this reason, it is necessary to conduct a thorough analysis of all the specifics and requirements in order to efficiently operate these Machine-to-Machine (M2M) services in mobile networks. Therefore, it is highly needed to propose a methodology for the optimal parameters setting in mobile network to provide a required quality of service on the one hand and to avoid the overprovisioning on the other. At the same time, also the energy efficiency of these connections has to be taken into account, since most terminal devices have limited power supplies.

  10. Completing missing samples in audio using modern techniques

    The need to complete the missing segment of an audio signal is an interesting task with the practical use (restoration of recordings, dropouts in VoIP calls, etc.). Current methods are capable of high quality interpolation of signals that are stationary in the vicinity of the missing section and have harmonic character. The study would focus on improving these methods by advanced signal processing approaches. Psyhcoacoustic viewpoint of the problem should be covered as well.

  11. Converters for mutual A/D and D/A conversions working in the current mode

    The work is focused on the design of A/D and D/A converters working in the current mode. The aim is to design a suitable structure of number-current and current-number converters without internal current-voltage and voltage-current conversions with respect to enhancing the bandwidth in comparison with converters working in the voltage mode. Part of the work is also the design and analysis of current-mode antialiasing filters. The design will start from unconventional circuit element structures such as current conveyors (CCI, CCII, CCIII) with simple or floating output, current feedback amplifiers (CFA) or transconductance amplifiers (OTA, BOTA, DBTA). Requirements to be met by the candidate: the knowledge of circuit theory and simulation programs (MicroCap, PSpice).

  12. Cryptographic algorithms and their optimization using hardware

    The topic is focused on modern encryption algorithms and the optimization of their implementation using hardware units, typically FPGA chips. The goal is to find algorithms suitable for the FPGA implementation, find and apply adequate optimization methods and develop a system for the encryption in high-speed networks.

  13. Current trends in the design of modern data networks

    Current data networks become more and more complex and cumbersome for both design and management due to the increasing demands for universality, high performance, efficiency, reliability and security. The scope of the Ph.D. thesis is the research of current development trends in the field, design and verification of new approaches to modern data network solutions for both current and near future needs for electronic form of communication.

  14. Data applications in new generation mobile networks and their analysis

    The scope of the Ph.D. thesis is the analysis of current state and the prediction of service data flow profile progress in modern mobile networks, both in current and in future ones. The goal of the research will be the analysis of subscriber service profiles and getting pieces of information from it. The mobile network performance evaluation from the perspective of user application data flows will be another partial topic of the thesis.

  15. Data control on the transportation layer

    Within the current communication networks one of the main requirements is the maximal usage of shared network resources. To keep the usage of shared network resources as effective as possible, already on the transportation layer mechanisms maintaining the retransmission timer and sliding window are implemented, which solve possible segment lost and mainly define the amount of sendable data units into the network. Based on the critical study and the description of the properties of the current algorithms, the dissertation thesis deals with the modification and design of own solutions that enable to use the available bandwidth during the communication between the source and target transportation layer entity.

  16. Design of distributed systems protection

    The aim is to analyse the aspects of protection in a frame of distributed systems and their algorithms with an emphasis on a potential safety risk. The design and optimization of new protection techniques for these systems is expected on the basis of obtained observation. Optimization involves the proposals of both mechanisms to improve the distributed systems and the procedures to either minimize or prevent the negatives effects affecting the functions of such is expected to propose the mathematical tools to describe the novel mechanisms. It is supposed to simulate or experimentally verify the functionality of the proposed solutions.

  17. Design of high-frequency symmetrical frequency-agile filters

    This thesis is focused on research of new concepts of high-frequency frequency-agile filters using non-conventional analog functions blocks. Frequency-agile filters are special type of reconfigurable filters that have property for agility. The aim of this work is the design of symmetrical class 1 to class n frequency-agile filters. The workability of proposed circuits will be proved by SPICE simulations and via experiments.

  18. Design of Modern IP Sophisticated Telematic Systems in Transport

    Telematic systems are particularly common in transport. Research into telematic systems based on the Internet protocol will be focused on the design of sophisticated, i.e. well-considered, formally well-developed and complicated methods that use IP systems in various areas. Surveillance and protection systems, systems of paying the fare, information systems and interactive applications, etc. are supposed in particular. Localization by GPS, vehicle diagnostics, and vehicle monitoring on ortho-maps in real situations are in the focus. Sophisticated telematic systems will be software simulated, optimized and subsequently hardware realized in the form of functional specimens. Communication between two cars without a driver intervention, collision avoidance, information transmission about traffic from the places cars left are expected. A highly accurate navigation system based on Galileo system (GNSS) for controlling functional blocks of cars are considered.

  19. Determining the degree of neurodegenerative disease disability from speech signals using ordinal regression models

    Already in the early stages of neurodegenerative diseases, including, for example, Parkinson's or Alzheimer's disease, speech disorders or, for example, hypokinetic dysarthria can occur. By acoustic speech analysis speech abnormalities for this typical type of disease can be identified. Early treatment of patients can secure more years without serious attributes of these diseases. The aim of the doctoral thesis is to propose the methods of speech analysis, which objectively estimate the degree of disability using classification based on ordinal regression models.

  20. Dispersions in high-speed optical networks

    The dissertation thesis is focused on the chromatic (CD) and polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in an environment of high-speed next generation NG- ON (Next Generation-Optical Networks) optical networks. Dispersion properties of optical networks are growing problem with increasing transmission speeds above 40 Gbit/s, so they have to be closely involved in the research. The work will be directed to the new possibilities of eliminating of dispersion phenomena negative impacts to the optical networks transmission parameters, compensation techniques and design of the new models utilizing the possibilities of advanced modulation formats, coherent detection and other advanced techniques.

  21. Effective Use of IP Networks in Crisis Situations

    The aim is to create an effective strategy for the use of the public and private IP network for crisis management. Also propose such a network, which could have the capacity, but also in terms of resistance to ensure the crisis communication. This would, in particular, traffic data, voice, TV broadcast. Other parts would propose new methods of Internet communication management-manage the flows of information, etc. Research should include also the influence of network topology on its stability and security, the speed of the spread of viruses, ability to resist attacks, etc. One of the objectives is to design a software robot that will be able to monitor the network topology, where appropriate, the Internet, the aim is to design a system for exchanging files over the Internet, but without any central control. The system would be intuitively usable. The solution should be safe and allow anonymous of the sender and the recipient of the data. The final. design of highly durable network suitable for crisis situations and this proposal prove theory.

  22. Environmental Noise Monitoring and Assessment

    Environmental noise is a worldwide problem that persists even in areas where extensive resources have been used for regulating, assessing and damping noise sources or for creation of noise barriers. Environmental noise protection requires making measurements in the field, assessing noise from specific sources, calculating expected noise levels, and mapping noise levels. The aim of this doctoral thesis is research of a new concept of permanent monitoring and assessment of environmental noise with identification of the noise sources and interactive mapping that uses modern wireless sensor networks with real-time monitoring and data visualization. The thesis topics comprise research and implementation of the noise analysis algorithms and design of a noise sensor hardware as well.

  23. Estimating the degree of neurodegenerative diseases disability based on acoustic analysis of speech

    Neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's or Alzheimer's disease can be diagnosed using various clinical, genetic and paraclinical tests. Among paraclinical methods there is also include the acoustic analysis of speech. Thanks to this analysis it is possible, for example, to identify hypokinetic dysarthria and quantify objectively the clinical symptoms such as monotony of speech, dysprosody, reduced mobility of speech organs, etc. Using acoustic analysis it is also possible to estimate the degree of disability, which is described by clinical neurologists, psychologists and speech therapists using various tests. The aim of the doctoral thesis is to design the methods for speech processing, through which it would be possible to estimate the value of various clinical tests used in the evaluation of Parkinson's disease (eg. Freezing Of Gait - FOG, Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale- UPDRS, Addenbrook’s Cognitive Examination ACE-R , etc.).

  24. Feature analysis of current-mode electronic frequency filters

    The work is focused on the feature analysis of current-mode electronic frequency filters. The aim is to design algoritmizable methods that lead to finding features of filters generally defined by the schematic. It will be necessary to evaluate the available feature ranges, e.g. quality, pass-band current transfer, dynamic range within a defined supply voltage, sensitivity, etc. In the case of finding the quality range, the point is to find the extremes of a multi-variable non-linear function. Mathematical tools (e.g. Maple or MathCAD) will first be used for this purpose; afterwards the algorithm itself will be designed. Requirements to be met by the candidate: algorithm thinking, the knowledge of computer programming and circuit theory.

  25. High-frequency transistor-level analog circuits

    The thesis is focused on research of new fully-differential and single-ended analogue structures with minimum transistor number. The goal is to design solutions (frequency filters, oscillators, etc.) with high-frequency operational frequencies in band over 100 MHz. The workability of designed solutions will be confirmed by simulations and/or by experimental measurements.

    The topic is focused on the area of the security of modern network infrastructures and services. The goal is the design of effective methods for the protection and vulnerability testing of high-speed networks against flood attacks and ISO/OSI model application layer attacks.   28. Identification of speech characteristics of neurodegenerative diseases using probabilistic clustering methods

    Development of early diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson's or Alzheimer's disease, leads to an inexpensive non-invasive techniques that focus on those symptoms that precede the symptoms of the later stages of the disease. Defects in speech, namely hypokinetic dysarthria, are one of the early clinical attributes of these diseases. The aim of the thesis will be to use probabilistic clustering methods to design the speech signal processing algorithms by which it will be possible to identify the voice characteristics (parameters) of the speech signal, which objectively distinguish diseased and healthy individuals.

    Nowadays, the use of the public Internet is limited for communication with emergency services, such us police and emergency medical service. The reason is that the current networking technologies for emergency communication including voice/video/text transmission do not have the properties and parameters required.   33. Interoperability and secure data sharing between the components of Internet of Things ecosystem

    In order to fully realize the vision of the Internet of Things (IoT), devices and apps need a common way to interact and speak to each other. Therefore, it is really important to create universal platform which will act as an interconnecting element for different vendor-, programming language- and communication technology-independent components of IoT ecosystem. The main goal of the doctoral thesis is to propose and develop the multi-platform middleware which will be implemented on an intelligent IoT gateway to provide common services and interfaces for secure communication, data sharing and control functions for IoT applications, sensor and actuators. One of the key tasks is to propose an open smart object data model and universal syntax to enable the information sharing between devices and sensors.

  34. LDPC codes

    The work will be focused on analysis of the current error control systems in wired and wireless transmission systems and design of alternative approaches using LDPC (Low-Density Parity-Check) codes. The goal will be mainly to utilize new codes and approaches. Today the CRC code and the RS-code with interleaving are often used. Based on this groundwork the new approaches to solving these systems will be introduced.

    There are three main approaches to dealing with the analysis of data: in memory in the database and called. Big Data. Objective of this thesis is to extend current methods for analyzing Big Data and with the help of massive parallelism to propose and validate new approches for technologies related to smart cities.     In recent years, so called deep neural networks (deep learning) has contributed to a significant shift in many areas of research, including - image recognition, text analysis etc. The aim of the thesis is to develop existing approaches using a huge collection of non annotated data for deep neural networks and their application to selected problems in projects.

  38. Management of Agent Networks Using POMDP Techniques

    The management of agent networks may include sensor scheduling, putting agents to wake/sleep state, adjusting sensing characteristics, adjusting characteristics of interagent communication, and resource allocation among agents. Using a suitably defined objective function, these tasks can be formulated as optimization problems. Partially observable Markov decision processes (POMDP) seem to provide a powerful framework for such optimizations. The goal of this thesis is to investigate the potential of POMDP for the management of agent networks, and to develop concrete POMDP-based network management methods.

    The aim of this work is to study mathematical models of data communication with respect of anomaly detection. The anomaly may be caused by either change in the data traffic structure or security incidents. The work should explore capabilities and suitability of various mathematical models for utilization in distinguished types of network utilization: internet connectivity for household, small or large enterprise, server farms, ISP, ...

  40. Methods of optical coherence tomography images reconstruction

    The PhD work will focus on research of methods for the registration and reconstruction of image data obtained by optical coherence tomography in cooperation with Medizinische Universität Wien. The work will implement algorithms using CUDA platform and distribution of time-consuming algorithms into the graphics card. It is assumed an internship at the foreign university.

    The goal of Ph.D. thesis is the research of current methods for mobile network performance assessment, their critical evaluation from the point of view of how difficult and costly the measurements are, and the design of new methods that utilize data obtained by data flow analysis from common subscribers.     The goals of PhD. study are concepts, algorithms, and systems for modeling sound propagation in variyng environment.   44. Modern methods of multiparametric image segmentation

    This PhD work will focus on the design of a methods for analyzing magnetic resonance image data obtained in collaboration with FN Bohunice. Development of methods will be based on literature search of current segmentation methods for the analysis of magnetic resonance tomography images. This work will also focus on methods for determining the quality of segmentation.

  45. Multicarrier modulations in optical transmission systems

    Multitone modulations are today frequently used modulation techniques, e.g. in ADSL, VDSL, PLC, DVB-T, DVB-T2, WLAN IEEE 802.11a, g, n technologies. In all the above mentioned systems the known and well described modulation DMT (Discrete MultiTone) or OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) is used. The work will be focused on possibilities of utilization of multicarrier modulations in optical transmission systems.

  46. Multimodal analysis of neurodegenerative diseases

    Neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's or Alzheimer's disease can be diagnosed using various clinical, genetic and paraclinical tests. Among paraclinical methods there are , for example, acoustic analysis of speech, digitized handwriting text or drawing analysis, analysis of brain activity using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). In order to better understand the activation of patient muscle (limbs, vocal tract) by impulses led from brain, it is necessary to simultaneously record, correlate and process different modalities. This kind of multimodal analysis is also a valuable tool for a comprehensive description of the disease. The aim of this doctoral thesis is to establish the concept of multimodal analysis of neurodegenerative diseases (mainly Parkinson's disease), which will be based on an analysis of speech, writing/drawing analysis and data analysis from fMRI. Based on the proposed concept the disease will be diagnosed and monitored in time.

  47. Narrowband data communication over power lines for telemetry

    This work focuses on the analysis, modeling and management systems for narrowband data transmissions over power lines. These transmissions are available especially for telemetry and control systems in energy, Smart Home, Smart Grid networks and remote reading. The main goal of the work is to design a new method for the determination of heavy network topology obtaining current transfer function.     The Ph.D. theses deals with the research on novel algorithms and techniques intended for distributed and centralized object tracking in ad-hoc networks.   51. Novel concepts of analog functional blocks with voltage differencing input

    The thesis is focused on research of novel types of analog functional blocks with voltage differencing input and their utilization in frequency filters, oscillators, synthetic inductors, etc. The aim is to design novel types of functional blocks with voltage differencing input that allow electronical tuning of current or voltage gains between terminals. The workability of proposed circuits will be proved by SPICE simulations and via experiments.

  52. Novel methods of biological signals extraction from medical images

    The theme is focused on processing of static, dynamic or three-dimensional images produced by different medical acquisition techniques, namely the output of the sonographic examination, body slices acquisition using the magnetic resonance etc. The goal is to improve properties of single images, their segmentation, 2D object recognition, quantification of different object parameters, their dynamic or spatial analysis, or eventual 3D model reconstruction. The main result of the work will be a proposal of a novel method being utilizable for solving of concrete diagnostic problems in cooperation with doctors.

  54. Object-Based Audio Processing

    In an object-based audio system, the different sound elements are bundled with metadata to form audio objects. This metadata then describes how the sound element should be reproduced to the listener, by defining its position in the 3D field, regardless the sound reinforcement system. Currently there are a number of approaches for positioning the audio objects, particularly ambisonics, VBAP, DirAC, and wavefield synthesis. Each of them has its advantages and disadvantages. The aim of this doctoral thesis is to analyze the possibilities of using these methods in real installations and to design and test new algorithms for positioning audio objects in 3D space.

  57. Parallelization of digital signal processing methods

    Modern computational systems (CPU, GPU, APU, and DSP) can make use of a number of parallel computation units. The application of parallelization has now been standardized through OpenCL, which allows parallel programming of heterogeneous systems. At the same time, simulation environments (such as Matlab and Simulink) are also provided with the possibility of parallel programming. To begin with, it is necessary to make an analysis of the possibilities offered by the current standards for process parallelization that can be applied to the basic and advanced methods of digital signal processing. The aim of the dissertation is to propose algorithms for digital signal processing methods that will exploit the possibilities of parallel programming both in the course of simulation and in the final implementation for the target computational system.

    Supporting the idea of using the data transfer to peer-to-peer communication between devices in a given locality.   60. QoE Optimization for Multimedia Services in Future Generation of Mobile Networks

    Together with the continuous development of communication technologies and terminal devices, also the end-user’s demands on the quality of service in mobile networks are increasing. The video streaming and social networks will be dominant applications in the future generation of mobile networks. Due to very specific aspects of these services, it is necessary to come up with an optimal setting of key network parameters in order to achieve maximum customer satisfaction. For this purpose, in-depth study on the relations between network variables on the one hand and the subjective quality perception on the other has to be carried out. Therefore, it will be necessary to design and then evaluate the methodology for the assessment and prediction of overall user’s satisfaction with mobile data services with the focus given especially to online video-streaming service YouTube.

  61. Research and optimization of analog circuit structures using parasitic effects of transistors

    The thesis is focused on research and optimization of MOS-only analog circuit structures (frequency filters, oscillators, immittance converters, etc.). The aim of this work is to design a low-voltage and low-power applications by advantageous usage of influences of transistor parasitics that work in frequency range tens of MHz. The workability of proposed circuits will be proved by SPICE simulations and via experiments.

    The dissertation is focused on research of novel structures of non-conventional chemical active function blocks such as current and voltage conveyors.     The aim is to analyse the up-to-date development and trends in the area of converged networks, mainly the problems of protection against cybernetic attacks. Research requires a summary of networks area, practice with MATALB or SCILAB programs, or knowledge of at least one of VHDL, C or Java languages, system FPGA, evolutionary algorithms, etc.

During synthesis, it is advised to use the methods of automated design and verification. Attention should be also focused on experimental verification of particular solutions, especially in area of analog signal processing.

    The spatiotemporal visualization method display the cumulative development of the sound field as a function of direction by forward-integrating the energy in the impulse response in short time frames. The motivation for the approach is the presentation of spatial sound field of listening rooms in format that enables quick comparison between rooms and emphasizes subjectively important aspects of the room.The aim of this work is to find new objective metrics using the spatiotemporal analysis and compare them with the subjective assessment of the quality of the listening room.

  72. Speech pitch determination based on empirical mode decomposition

    The fundamental frequency is the one of the important parameters of the speech signal. Its estimation is due to the nonstationary of speech signal quite difficult. Empirical mode decomposition is an advanced method for analyzing nonstationary signals based on signal decomposition into intrinsic mode functions adapted to the base signal content. The instantaneous frequency, among other parameters, can be determine using the Hilbert transform. The content of the dissertation research will be research of the basic method of detection frequency tone and its comparison with other known methods.

  76. Utilization of RC Elements with Distributed Parameters in Electrical Circuits, Fractal Circuits

    The topic aims at the research into utilization of resistive-capacitive elements with distributed parameters (RC-EDP) in electrical circuits especially with modern active elements (conveyors, current amplifiers etc.). In particular it will include design of so-called fractal circuits which have non-integer order of transfer or immittance function and which can be implemented by RC-EDP. It is expected proposing new frequency filters, oscillators, synthetic immittance elements and other circuits. The aim will be improving properties compared to existing circuits (reducing dimensions, increasing response speed, decreasing power consumption etc.) and moreover obtaining characteristics that cannot be realized by classical elements or only at the cost of using complex structures.
