Therapeutic and Prothetic Technology

Basic therapeutical approaches, physical therapy. Effect mechanisms of physical therapy. Principles and design of devices and therapeutical and surgical systems – exploitation of ionizing and non-onizing radiation, ultrasound, low temperatures. Therapeutical effects on human organism. Understanding of the basic concepts of the principles and design of therapeutical and surgical systems, surgery, organ replacement and operation of medical systems.

Course curriculum

Basic therapeutical concepts, approaches, physical therapy. Stimulators, ultrasonic therapy, electric surgery, hyperthermia , high-frequency heating of tissue, radiotherapy, blood surgery, cryosurgery, lasers. Effects of therapeutical processes on human organism. Support and replacement of organs.

To provide the students with understanding of the basic therapeutical principles and design of therapeutical and surgical electronic systems, support and replacement of organs.

1. Therapeutical principles, physical therapy, introduction
2. Electric stimulation of muscles and organs.
3. Cardiostimulators, gastro - and urostimulators.
4. Ultrasonic physical therapy, aerosology and surgery
5. High-frequency heating of tissue, hyperthermia, electrotomy
6. Radiotherapy by nuclides and accelerated electrons, the gamma knife
7. Cryosurgery, principles and technical solutions
8. Application of lasers in surgery, technical solutions
9. Anestesiological and ventillation systems
10. Support and replacement of heart, extrasomatic circulation
11. Support of kidneys, hemodialysis and hemofiltration
12. Sensoric support, digital hearing aids, cochlear and optical neurological aids
13. Computer planning and therapy management

1-2Design and verification by experiment of the generator of harmonic and shape oscillations in LabView
3-4 Design and verification by experiment of the function of selected therapeutical devices in LabView
5-6 Design and stimulation of the measurement of auditory characteristics in LabView
7-8 EEG feedback application in nervous system therapy – PC playstations
9-10 EEG, EMG measurements using the BIOPAC computer system for subsequent therapy
11-12 EMG, EEG biofeedback simulation in Labview
