The Philosophy of Post-modernism and Gender Issues - Winter

Lectures with discussions related to the themes of contemporary philosophical approaches towards perception and creation. Analyses of artworks with respect to gender studies of individual authors. The difference between the thinking of modernism, postmodernism and present-day art. Outlines of further possible approaches on the grounds of experiences of a curator, instructor and critic. The emphasis is put on reflection, projection amd communication of art in its contemporary typology, including vitual and intermedia expression.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

To be able to analyze current and relevant conditions of the society, to be able to assume an attitude towards it, to get one´s own approach towards it.To be able to orientate in the relations and systems of contemporary culture, to differentiate individual trends and ethnical specifics. To be able to find the criteria of one´s own assessment, to find one´s own way to media and marketing in the field of art. To be able to communicate with others, to learn tolerance of opinion, to set one´s own hierarchy of values and to have one´s own vision.

Course curriculum

1. Phenomenology and existentialism (Husserl, Heidegger, Nietzsche, Merleau-Ponty, Sartre ) and their relationship to action, performance, and body art.
2. Asian mutation of phenomenology and neostructuralism (Barthes, Lévi-Strauss, Lee-U-Fan) - the contribution of Asian art to international context of action art; the idea of immateriality
3. Neopositivism and metaphysics (Wittgenstein, Foucault, Buber, Lévinas), postconceptualism, open situation in installations, environment, scenic, and public space
4. Post-modernism and deconstruction (Lzotard and Derrida) - postmodern art, photography, and painting, new object installations

Aims

To clarify contemporary perspectives, perceptions and thoughts in art by means of the historic retrospective of a philosophical and arthistoric explication. To stimulate a critical relation to the questions of individual and collective identity, to reflect authenticity of artistic expression and original way of creative expression of individual and collective "image", to investigate areas of conscious and unconscious mind of both individuals and society. The final aim is the cultivation of one´s own personality and gaining both moral and humane orientation in the life of the society.
