Book as a medium. Development of shape/form. Typography and illustrations. Bibliophilism. Historic overview of bookbinding. Types of industrial and handmade bindings and covers. Bookbinding as art and craft. Books - object, artists´ books. Public and private books.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Lectures on book.
To understand the attributes of traditional books is important for some artistic branches where books play the role of "realisation outputs".

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations..

Exam conditions: Overall knowledge of explained topics and recommended literature.

Course curriculum

Lectures on book.
a) Book as medium. Development of books´ shapes (scolls, ... codex, CD-ROM). Description of codex books.
b) Typography and book illustrations. Bibliophilism.
c) Historic overview of bookbinding.
d) Types of industrial bindings/covers. Modification of adjustment of a book.
e) Types of handmade bookbindings/covers (cpp, Bradel, ckfv...)
Cases for book bindings
f) Book binding as art and craft. Modern artistic bookbinding. Czech school of artistic bookbinding.
g) Personalities of the world artistic bookbinding.
h) Books- objects, (artists´ books).
ch) Private and public books. Issues of bibliography and cataloguing.
i) Excursion to manual and industrial bookbinderies.

Aims

Lectures on book.
Lectures are mainly focused on a physical phenomenon of "a beautiful book" which increasingly acquires special new dimensions in contarst with more and more rational and industrial production of books or with new information media (like electronic books).

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences
