Learning outcomes of the course unit

Theory of Paper:
Paper is an important material in fine art, therefore its adequate use requires intimate knowledge of it. Theory of Book: Understanding the attributes of the traditional book is important for some fields of art for which a book is the "output".

Course curriculum

Lectures on paper
a) Paper as medium. Definition of paper. Wood pulp - cellulose. Fibre and pupl. Historical, modern, special and bizarre raw materials.
Pulp texture of paper.
b) Making paper in a paper-making machine. Production of cellulose. Beating of pupl. Whiting of paper. Colouring of paper. Gluing of paper.
Adjustment of inner structure of paper. Adjustment of paper surface.
c) General characteristics of paper. Surface density. Thickness of paper. Two-sidedness of paper. Longitudinal and transversal direction of fibres. Determination of longitudinal and transversal direction. Stiffnes of paper. Firmness of paper. Translucence and transparence of paper. Dimensional stability of paper.
d) Production of handmade paper. Characteristics of European handmade paper. Characteristics of oriental handmade paper. Modification of handmade paper production. Filagree.
e) Paper formats. Paper storing. Paper - cardboard/carton - paperboard. Types of paper. Paper for artists.
f) Paper cultivation.
g) Paper as artistic medium. Paper Art.
h) Institutions dealing with paper.

Aims

Lectures on Paper
Lectures on Paper are mainly focused on paper as "a pad", on which artists draw, paint, print etc.
However, paper art is a new artistic category, presentig paper as an artistic medium "on its own".
