Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Evaluation of individual exercises during the semester, checking the deadline, final seminar work. General knowledge of explained topics and recommended literature.

Course curriculum

2nd semester - grotesque, egyptian, more advanced script. All in the following modifications: book type, half-bold type, condensed type.
Final continuous text A2 of the selected type. If the required tasks are not completed, credits will not be awarded.

Aims

Ability to write, draw and design fonts. Ability to understand wide possibilities of font and type use not only in the printing industry but also as a means of orientation and information. Ability to realize the importance of lettering in city folklore, in fashion, in visual media and in architecture. Mastering the manual skill, learning by heart of a number of alphabets, understanding the values to be strived at. Not only the beauty of a type but also the degree of legibility a quality of the page (text layout) based on good light, rhythm and especially structure. Beginners should learn the logic of and relations between the type layout, weight of script, shading, distinguishability, and the influences of computer work and modern (albeit short-lived) trends.
