Course detail

Weldability of Material

FSI-FSMAcad. year: 2007/2008

The course familiarises students with the terminology and philosophy of weldability of material, fundamental factors influencing on weldability, the possibilities of optimalisation them. Also dealt with is the calculation of weldability by means of numerical and parametric equations, defects in welding joints as a consequence of worse weldability of metallic materials. It focuses also on the ways to improve the weldability. These methods and measures will be demonstrated on examples. Students will be cognizant of the equipment used for welding by selected technological methods and of filler metals for welding.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will have an overview of welding methods and weldability of all types of steel, alumina alloys, nickel and copper alloys. They will be made familiar with degradation processes in HAZ and calculation of weldability. Also dealt with is the influence of welding processes on the properties of materials. The knowledge acquired in this course is necessary as basis for working out of a diploma thesis and for mastering special welding technologies.

Prerequisites

Students are expected to be familiar with the following: Fe – Fe3C equilibrium diagram. TTT and thermokinetic diagrams. Testing of mechanical properties of metals. Heat treatment of steels. Fundamentals of welding technology.

Co-requisites

Aims

The main objective of the course is to provide students with the theoretical foundations and methodology necessary for solving weldability of materials - namely steels and non-ferrous metals. Students will acquire knowledge necessary for a complex solution weldability matals.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Attendance at exercises is compulsory. Absence may be compensated for by the agreement with the teacher who can set a special programme to be worked out..
