Learning outcomes of the course unit

Design of machine parts and mechanisms, computational verification of designed machine parts and mechanisms and evaluation of their reliability for the desired technical life.

Prerequisites

Students are assumed to have the knowledge of Fundamentals of Design, material science and of mechanics of solids, which they have obtained in previous part of their study at FME BUT.

Terms of the graded course-unit credit: regular participation at seminars, solving all assignments and passing the written test of topics presented at lectures.

Aims

The aim of the course is for students to learn how to construct machine parts and mechanisms.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Participation in lectures is recommended; participation at seminars is checked and recorded. Education runs according to the week schedule. The way of compensation of missed seminars is specified by the tutor.

Syllabus

1.Limit states of machine parts and mechanisms, static strength and fatigue strength.
2.Classification of variable loading. S-N diagrams, basic factors influencing of fatigue strength.
3.Bolts, screw joints and threaded joints.
4.Welded joints, design of butt and filled welds.
5.Bonded joints, pins.
6.Joints for transmission of torque from the shaft to the shaft-supported element.
7.Design and calculation of shafts.
8.Rolling bearings, mounting and enclosure, lubrication of bearings, bearing life calculation.
9.Fundamentals of tribology, friction and wear in mechanisms, plain bearings.
10.Gears, properties and usage.
11.Geometry, kinematics of spur gears and bevel gears.
12.Calculation of load capacity of spur gears.
13.Calculation of load capacity of worm gears. Geometry of worm profiles.
