Ecology of Industry

FSI-EEPAcad. year: 2007/2008

The course provides students with the introduction to the theory of ecology and the protection of the environment in practice. It also deals with the negative impacts of the production and consumption on the environment with respect to individual industrial branches and other activities of the human society. Also dealt with are methods, means and procedures minimizing the negative impacts on the environment and the overall strategy of the protection of the environment with respect to the sustainable growth.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The course provides students with information required for the development of engineering creativity and skills to understand the problems of polluting the environment and the basis of the permanent sustainable growth.

Prerequisites

Knowledge corresponding to the study of the first two semesters of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is assumed.

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Course-unit credit requirements: Attendance at seminars, students present a paper on the excursion or on a selected topic. The exam has two parts. The first one is a written test. One of the students draws three questions and students chose two of them to answer. If it is necessary, the exam is followed by a discussion. If a student prefers an oral exam, the written part is skipped.

Aims

The course objective is for students to understand and accept the basics of the environmental protection into their way of thinking. From the long-term perspective it is vital to take care of the product, machine, or system of machines (including technologies) not only from the point of their design, production and proper function, but the possibility of their recycling or use after their lifespan has been over, has to be considered as well.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Obligatory attendance of the students is only related to seminars, where the presence of students will be recorded. An absent student will be obliged to compose a paper on an assigned topic.
