Academic propaedeutics

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Credits are awarded on the basis of participation and working on course assignments. Attendance of more than 70% is required.

 

Lectures and seminars take place at the premises of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Brno University of Technology at designated times.

 

Aims

The course aims to develop students` writing skills with a view to publishing their work. Students become competent in writing academic texts and learn about the specifics of writing embedded in creative practice.

 

Students know how to write a research paper on a given topic in keeping with academic standards. Students know how to draw upon their creative practice when writing a paper.

Syllabus

  1. Academic writing. Styles of academic writing (continental/Teutonic vs. Anglo-Saxon), citation styles (VVP AVU, ČSN ISO 690, APA, MLA, Chicago author-date).
  2. Libraries and information sources. Collections, catalogues, databases, portals. International registration systems (ISBN, ISSN). Primo VUT. Bibliography, bibliographical review.
  3. Writing an abstract (descriptive/indicative, informative, structured IMRAD/AIMRAD, funding, critical). Conference abstract and conference participation. Keywords.
  4. Publishing. How to choose the right periodical? Popular magazines and academic journals. Article manuscript, translation, copyediting, proofreading. Academic journals and peer review process. Journal indexing (Web of Science, Scopus, Ebsco, ERIH PLUS).
  5. Non-scholarly theorizing. Autotheory, auto-fiction, theory-fiction. Storytelling as worldbuilding, speculative fiction, critical fabulation. Writing embedded in artistic/lived practice, embodied writing. Hybrid formats combining text and image, formats with non-linear structure, hypertext writing. Formats and platforms for the publication of artistic research, Research Catalogue.
  6. Research paper guidelines and requirements.
  7. Copyright and ethical issues. Open access, Creative Commons (CC) licenses. Situated writing, inclusive language, citation ethics.
