Pragmatics

The course gives the students information on pragmatic categories of language, namely pragmatic meaning interpreted by extralinguistic means, and the awareness of cooperative principle and illocutionary force appropriate use. This knowledge will facilitate the students' sophisticated use of language in professional contexts.

The extent of knowledge at secondary school level, and the knowledge of English at upper-intermediate level.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

The exam consists of the following parts:

test part of the exam: a test in the 2nd half of the semester (20 points, min. 10);

written part of the exam: a written assignment according to the instructions in elearning (20 points, min. 10);

oral part of the exam at the end of the semester (60 points, min. 30). 

 

 


The content and forms of instruction in the course are specified by a regulation issued each year by the lecturer responsible for the course.

Aims

The aim of the course is to learn about the essential pragmatic categories, i.e. pragmatic meaning, co-operative principle, politeness principle, and illocutionary force and its modulation.
Students will acquire basic information on linguistic pragmatics. They will learn about pragmatic categories, i.e. pragmatic meaning, co-operative principle, politeness principle, illocutionary force. They will be able to utilize the acquired knowledge in the production and comprehension of electrical engineering texts.
