Applied Technology of Painting 1

Each class revolves around a cental topic. We will focus on such diverse topics as painting tools, the selection and preparation of the base materials, pigments, the painterly technique - including the finish of the paintings and their archivation. The aforementioned topics will, however, reflect current technological approaches in contemporary painting. A part of each class will include discussions focused on the market with artists' supplies and their alternatives. The students' work will function as the feedback for the discussion.

Aims

Students should learn various painterly techniques and skills, be able to apply them to their own artistic approach and to the currently available materials on the markets and strive for mastering and perfecting these skill.s
Students will be able to apply technological knowledge to their own artworks, they will have a better sense of the art supplies market, and will have some basic knowledge about the chemicals used in painting.

Syllabus

Students will first analyze their own work and its technological aspects. They will learn about the variety of tools, the characteristics of pigments, media, and vehicles, they will learn to prepare the correct priming corresponding to particular techniques (tempera, oil, acrylics, etc).
