Syllabus:

1. Introduction. Appropriateness of translation. Types of translation.

2. Translation procedures and types of equivalence.

3. Style, genre and register.

4. Style and genre – practice.

5. Practical technical texts.

6. Business and technology news.

7. Technology news – practice.

8. Texts in education / university.

9. Texts in education – practice.

10. Machine translation – rule-based, statistical and neural MT.

11. MT translation software (Google Translate, Bing MS Translator, DeepL). 

12. Stylistic differences in translation.

13. Final test & translation.

Entry knowledge

The secondary school knowledge and pre-intermediate knowledge of English are required.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Written test and exam.
The content and forms of instruction in the evaluated course are specified by a regulation issued by the lecturer responsible for the course and updated for every academic year.

Semester last 13 weeks. Attendence on seminars is compulsory. Minimal level of attendence is set to 75%. If exceeded, missed lessons have to be substituted.

Aims

To learn and train the appropriate approches to English-Czech and Czech-English translations. To emphasize the differences in syntax and similarities in lexis.
The ability to use appropriate translating skills and ability to distinquish and interpret the pragmatic meaning.
