Styles and genres in ESP

The course aims to develop English language competences on level C1 of CEFR. The focus is on formal oral and written communication in the academic and professional environments in terms of both grammar and lexis as well as stylistics and pragmatics. The students are presented with the most common genres in the academic and professional discourse (an abstract, a scholarly article, a popular science article, a manual, a CV, a covering letter, a project proposal, a presentation, etc.), analyse their stylistic features, practice writing them, and learn how to reference cited materials.

Entry knowledge

Knowledge and skills at B2 level (CEFR) are required, i.e. a student has to pass successfully the preceding exams in the subjects Practical English. 

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Homework assignment (36 points; minimum 18 points): submit several written assignments (a manual, a formal email, an abstract).

Project (14 points; minimum 7 points): give a popular science presentation

Written exam (50 points; minimum 25 points)



75% attendance is required.

 

Aims

Development of academic language skills and knowledge with a particular focus on the writing skills on the level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. 

The student is able to:

- write well-structured academic and technical texts using appropriate style

- correctly cite utilized source materials

-  react effectively in terms of written professional and business communication

- understand academic and technical texts on the native-speaker level
