Czech Language for Interpretation

The course offers the students basic theoretical and practical tools that can be used in translation process – e.g. techniques of creative writing and theory of functional sentence perspective. The course further widens students’ knowledge of English and Czech word order differences and it also offers an introduction into interpretation and understanding of a text. It also focuses on practical skills as far as the creation of a correctly witten Czech texts are concerned - whether from the point of view of appropriate style or correct grammar.

Entry knowledge

Secondary school knowledge of Czech and intermediate level of English are required

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Examination will be awarded for delivering a seminar thesis analyzing problematic or questionable features of an existing Czech translation of an English text of student’s choice, interpreting why the mistakes have occured and suggesting other posobility or posibilities. The maximum number of points are 40 and the thesis has to be delivered before the 13th week of semester.

The exam, where the maximu number of point is 60, using a in-class written test, tests the ability of the student to apply practical stylistic skills as well as practival knowledge concerning Czech grammar.


Aims

The aim of the course is to improve students’ abilities to create stylistically diverse, especially written, texts in Czech, but English as well.
Student is able to:

- to choose appropriate expreessions across the whole spectrum of stylistic means depending on the function of the resulting text.
- to select appropriate formal structure when creating a text.
- to define, analyse and interpret the relationship and differences in meaning between the source text and its translation caused by culural, linguistic and pragmatic factors.
- to find mistakes in existing translation when comparing it with the source text, correct these mistakes and defend his or her choice.
