Painting in architecture 1

The course is designed as a series of consecutive lectures. Within each class, students will learn about the work of important personalities in the field. Each lecture will focus on the relationship between art and architecture, with an emphasis on the present. The students' activity in reflecting on the topics through discussion is essential.

Completing the course should help students navigate the field and strengthen their ability to think interdisciplinarily and broaden their horizons to inspire their own work.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Theoretical lectures, discussions, practical examples and their analysis.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The following conditions are set for the award of credit:
- active participation in class (2 permitted unexcused absences)
- reading the recommended literature on the topic and searching for examples
- completion of the final test, which is written during the credit week

Course curriculum

1. Introduction. Is painterly intervention in architecture a mere decoration?
2. Is architecture art? Does architecture need artistic intervention?
3. Types of painting interventions and the role of contemporary art in architecture.
4. Rhythm, its meanings, roles and tools of communication.
5. What is ornament? Does it have any content?
6. Ways of cooperation between artist, architect and investor.
7. How to read architectural space. The importance of the architectural, social, geographical and historical aspects of sites for artistic intervention.
8. Ornament, environment, place name.
9. Credit week (final lesson): written test, its evaluation and joint reflection.

Aims

The aim of the course is to offer students a basic orientation in the key concepts and different roles of painting interventions in architecture and space. To introduce students to the different types of collaboration within the triangle of artist, architect and investor.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Teaching takes place in the classrooms of the KTDU FaVU in the hours determined by the schedule. The minimum attendance is 85 %. Make-up for missed classes is done in agreement with the teacher in the form of alternative assignments.
