Learning outcomes of the course unit
Student will master the course objective and will know how to safely and economically design foundations of structures at different geotechnical conditions. Student will have basic knowledge about specific geotechnical problems and with basic rocky properties, rock classification and with underground urbanization.
Prerequisites
Soil formation, types of foundation soils, engineering geological investigation, strength and elasticity of materials, fundamentals of structural mechanics and soil mechanics.

Course curriculum
1. Introduction to the subject (terminology, case studies).
2. Types of geomaterials (soils, rocks, light materials, geosynthetics - properties).
3. Typical correlations in geotechnical practice.
4. Stiffness of soils.
5. Strength of soils (theory of critical state).
6. Introduction to constitutive models - Linear elastic - perfectly plastic constitutive models.
7. Introduction to constitutive models - Elastoplastic constitutive models.
8. Pile fundations (groups, uplift).
9. Combined foundations (shallow and piles).
10. Retaining structures (earth pressures for special cases, atypical shapes).
11. Geotechnical monitoring.
Aims
To teach the students how to safely and economically design foundations of structures at different geotechnical conditions. To acquaint the students with specific geotechnical problems. Further with basic rocky properties, rock classification and with underground urbanization.
Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences
Extent and forms are specified by guarantor’s regulation updated for every academic year.
