Railway Structures I

Synthesis of civil engineering including railway structures and constructions. Development of world railway network. Development and characteristics of railway network within the Czech territory, organizing and maintenance structure of Czech Railways. Transport terminology, basic terms. Basic division of railway structures.
Wheel-rail interface, vehicle and railway track, theory of railway vehicle running (Vehicle - track mechanic system. Railway vehicles design. Railway vehicle running in straight track and in curve).
Railway track geometry components and alignment within operation speed 160 km.h-1. (Rail track gauge, cant and twist, longitudinal track alignment in horizontal and vertical direction, track alignment for operation of tilting body trains).
Clearances. The centre line distances in open track and in railway stations. Alignment of railway lines, railway track design.

Geodesy in Civil Engineering, coordinate systems, geodetic computations, measurement of directions and angles, distance measurements, height systems, height measurements, setting out of buildings, roads and railways, maps
Basic terms, division of railway structures. Track alignment design parameters and its spatial positions – basic terms.

Course curriculum

1. Railway track geometry components and track alignment design parameters within operation speed 160 km/h.
2. Vehicle – rail system.
3. Rail track gauge and gauge widening.
4. Cant, distance-related cant gradient, time-related cant gradient, cant deficiency.
5. Horizontal track alignment. Transition curves.
6. Nonlinear transition curves.
7. Compound curves. Transition curves connecting two circular curves. Reverse curves.
8. Vertical track alignment, gradients, vertical curves.
9. Track alignment design parameters for operation of tilting body trains.
10. Geodetic surveying of track layout, track layout optimization problems.
11. Geodetic layouts and fixing of rail track alignment.
12. Clearances.
13. The centre line distances in open track and in railway stations.

Aims

The objective of the subject is to introduce students to the problems of railway track geometry components and alignment, clearances and centre line distances and to practise acquires knowledge and skills.
