Laboratory Classes in Color Science and Technology

The course Laboratory Classes in Color Science and Technology is focused to consolidation and expansion of students' theoretical knowledge acquired at the correspoding theoretical lecture course. Further, it should develop and enhance practical measurement and experimental data interpretation skills in the domain of color science and technology. These two complex and complementary subject fields include the theory of light and radiation, human response to light, interaction of radiation and matter, influence of chemical compostion of matter on its color and apperance, applied chemistry of colorants, basic principles of color reproduction, mathematical description and modelling of color etc.

Learning outcomes of the course unit
The improvement of practical skills and competences will be manifested in the following ways:
1) Students will learn how to search for information in the domain specific information databases (Colour Index International).
2) Students will acquire practical working skills with reflectance spectrometers of 45/0 geometry a will learn how to use the measured spectra for objective color description.
3) Students will learn color difference calculations and their application for process control.
4) Students will be trained in good laboratory praxis of analytical transmission UV-VIS spectrometers measurements (Labert-Beer law limits, optimum absorbace values, multichromophore mixture analysis).
5) Students will understand the influence of surface topology on reflectance measurement (specular and diffused reflection). They will be trained in controlling this phenomenon by measuremnt with integration sphere (0/D geometry).
6) Students will understand the influence of illuminant on the computed colorimetric coordinates and appearance of colored objects, including the effect of fluorescence.
7) Students will acquire practical experience of related analytical methods relying on visual assessment (TLC and paper chromatographic separation of dyes mixtures).
Basic knowledge of general, inorganic, organic, physical and analytical chemistry, physics and optics. Lambert/Beer law, UV/VIS spectrometry instrumentation, basic chemical calculations skills.
Basic experiemntal and measurement skills, chemical informatics, experimental data analysis.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course uses teaching methods in form of Laboratory exercise - 3 teaching hours per week. The e-learning system (LMS Moodle) is available to teachers and students.
Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes
The course final grade is binary pass/fail statement. The pass grade will be granted on the basis of:
- 100% attendance of the course
- submitting reports from all tasks
- final written test (50 % pass threshold)

1. The influence of chemical sturcture on the color of industrial dyes
2. Mathematical color description

4. Lambert-Beer law in color science
5. The influence of electrolyte on dye absorption, investigation of path length role in the Lambert-Beer law
6. Colorimetric determination of concentration
7. Assesment of paper properties by reflectance measurement
8. TLC chromatography
9. Natural dyes in green leaves and red peppers.
10. Process control of heat-tranfer printing by means of color difference measuremtn
11. Dye separation by paper chromatography
12. Analysis of dye mixtures
The aim of these laboratory classees is to provide the students with a platform for development of practical laboratory skills in the field of color science and technology. Students are expected to learn to operate typical measurement devices (spectrometers and colorimeters) and learn to analyze measured data for the purpose of material properties and technological process description. In this way they should acquire knowledge and skills necessary for their further study as well as professional carreer.
Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences
100 % attendance of the classes is compulsory. lessons missed for medical and serious personal reasons need to be substituted at the end of the semester.
In the beginning of the lab lesson, the theoretical knowledge and preparation of students is briefly checked by means of a few oral questions.
A written report summarizing the work procedure, measured data and their interpretation must be composed for each of the 12 tasks. It must be submitted by the end of the semester at latest, preferably the following week after the task has been passed. Unsatisfactory reports are returned for corrections.
