Laboratory Classes in Hydrobiology
FCH-BC_HYB_PAcad. year: 2020/2021
The objective of the course is to give students practically oriented information about basic methods of qualitative and quantitative hydrobilogical analysis. The subject consists of following topics: Basics of microscopic techniques and fundamental principles of water sampling. The sampling of activated sludge from waste-water treatment plant and its consequent analysis, introduction to other methods of microorganisms determination in wastewater. Sampling of flowing and stagnant waters and their consequent analysis. Determination of saprobic index. Excursion to laboratories focussed on hydrobiological and microbiological examination of water.
Learning outcomes of the course unit
Increased knowledge, skills and competencies of students will be reflected in the following areas:
Mastering of the practical implementation of the qualitative and quantitative hydrobiological analysis associated with handling microscopic techniques. Familiarization with sampling methods of different types of waters, sediments, benthic macroinvertebrates, phyto-and zooplankton. Understanding of saprobic index calculation and its importance for the estimation of surface water pollution. Introduction to basic standards in the field of analysis and assessment of drinking and surface water quality.
Students will be able to expand their knowledge and skills to confront it during excursion in hydrobiological and chemical laboratories of VÚVH in Brno.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The subject is implemented in the form of: Laboratory exercise - time allocation - 2 lessons per week.
Regarding to that it is not possible to take samples for task purposes and complete analyzes within two hours, the practice is realized in block form, ie 6 blocks after 4 hours, once every 14 days. The LMS Moodle e-learning system is available to lecturers and students.
Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes
A prerequisite for credit obtaining is:
Elaboration protocols for practical tasks in the required quality.
Preparation of a presentation on the given topic, and 100% participation.
The above mentioned is taken into account in the final evaluation, which is based on the successful graduation of the final test (10 questions).
Language of instruction
Practice is conceived in 6 learning blocks after 4 hours, once every 14 days.
1 - Fundamentals of microscopic technique, the basic principles of water sampling. Overview of basic methods for determination of quantitative and qualitative hydrobiological analysis.
2 - The sampling and consequent analysis of samples of stagnat water (microskopic image according to ČSN norm, identification of macrozoobenthos).
3 - The sampling and consequent analysis of samples of running water (microskopic image according to ČSN norm, identification of macrozoobenthos).
4 - Monitoring of wastewater - analysis of activated sludge, microskopic image according to ČSN norm. Saprobity, saprobic index determination.
5 - Presentations of selected topics.
6 - Excursions to accredited laboratories dealing with hydrobiological and microbiological water analysis.
The aim of this course is gaining of practical knowledge and experience in the processing of native and fixed hydrobiological material, familiarization with the basic methods for determination of organisms important for different types of aquatic habitats. This knowledge supplemented by information obtained in the lectures of Hydrobiology course will enable to better understand the problems associated with water protection technology and a water treatment technologies, whose mastery is essential for the application in practice.
Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences
Oral examination in each practice lessons with aim to check the preparedness of students.
Developing of protocols for the given tasks.
Elaboration of power-point presentation.
Credit test at the end of the course.
