Digital sculpture – 3D machining 2

The course main rationale is to make students acquainted with robotic 3D machining and its possibilities, safety of work in robotized workplace, robot programming, 3D model preparation for machining, import model into Autodesk PowerMill, NC path generation, robot simulation and motion, selection and preparation of material for machining, practical exercises from 3D machining.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students are familiar with the problematics of robotic machining. They are able to estimate a suitable procedure for the production of specific objects and prepare milling strategies in a 3D machining program. They are able to work independently with a machining robot.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of working with PC, ability to navigate in virtual space, patience and interest in 3D technologies. Experience with 3D programs (3D Max, Maya, Rhinoceros 3D, SolidWorks, etc.) is welcomed.

A series of lectures accompanied with briefings and practical exercises leading to the acquisition of skills.

Credit awarded on a basis of attendance (80%) and completion of assigned tasks.

1) Introduction to milling, machine kinematics, milling methods
2) Robotic hand options
3) Introduction to robotic workplace safety, basic service and health check.
4) Manual robot programming
5) Introduction to software, model import, modification
6) Setting of simulation parameters
7) Machining simulation and robot movement adjustment
8) 3D robotic machining

Aims

The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the technology of 3D robotic machining and teach them to use this technology to create spatial objects. On the basis of lectures and practical exercises, students should acquire the necessary skills for independent work in the field of robotic machining, and thus broaden their knowledge of the use of other technology in modern sculpture.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Active participation in the classes is necessary, so compulsory - teaching will take the form of lectures and exercises, where students divided into groups of two will be encouraged to cooperate on exercise tasks.
