Digital Signal Processing

Analog and digital signals. Signals’ categories. Measurement of signals from mechanical and thermo-mechanical systems. Deterministic signals. Fourier’s analysis and Fourier’s transformation. Analog filters. Digital filters. Measurement of periodic signals of machines. Order analyses. Concurrent analyses. Modulation and demodulation of signals. Application of signal analysis in diagnostic of machines with tooth wheels and roller bearings.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

This course enables students to acquire the knowledge and basic practical skills within the area of application of measurement techniques in field of combustion engines and road vehicles with focus on digital signal data processing.

Prerequisites

Algebra. Differential and integral calculus. Fundamentals of statistics. Fundamentals of electro technical engineering.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course is taught through lectures explaining the basic principles and theory of the discipline.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The exam verifies and evaluates the knowledge of mathematical and physical fundamentals of presented problems and application to solved tasks, foremost in relation with a dissertation thesis. The exam consists of a written part and an oral part.

Aims

The objective of this course is to make students familiar with application of analog and digital measurement techniques in area of combustion engines and road vehicles, measurement and evaluation of diagnostic signals with focus on specific problems of specialization.

1. Signals classification, analog signals, digital signals.
2. Measurement of signals from mechanical structures.
3. Signal sampling, A/D converters.
4. Random signal characteristics in frequency domain.
5. - 6. Fourier's analysis and Fourier's transformation, FFT algorithm.
7. - 8. Processing of signals by digital filters, FIR and IIR filters.
9. Filtering of signals from periodic working machines, order and concurrent analyses.
10. Frequency characteristic measurement.
11. - 12. Experimental modal analysis.
13. Signal analysis in diagnostic of machines with tooth gears and roller bearings.
