Theory of Measurement, Techniques of Measurement and Technical Diagnostics

The course introduces basic metrological terms and explains their content: physical quantity, measurement, signal, measurement classification, basic measurement procedures, measurement tools, measurement value processing algorithms, measurement accuracy and error, measurement result and uncertainty. Measuring methods and modern imaging methods.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Understanding of the selected physical phenomena from the point of view of their use as a basis of measuring and imaging methods, sensors and function of measuring devices.

Prerequisites

Knowledge and active application of concepts of mathematics and physics at the level of basic courses of technical study programs.

The examination consists of an oral and written part.

Course curriculum

1. Metrology and its physical basis.
2. Basic and derived units.
3. Measured signals and their characteristics: general properties of signals and their parameters, random signals and their characteristics, signals loaded with errors.
4. Signal transformation: general concepts of signal transformation, signal quantization, signal discretization.
5. Measurement accuracy analysis.
6. Classification of measurement errors: random errors, systematic errors; methods to reduce systematic components of a measurement error, measurement uncertainty.
7. Methods of processing the results of direct measurements. Methods of processing the results of indirect measurements.
8. Basic characteristics of measuring tools. Analogs and digital devices.
9. Sensors: basic types of sensors and physical principles of their operation.
10. Methods of increasing accuracy of measuring instruments.
11. Diagnostic methods (selection). Ultrasonic methods. X-ray methods. Radiation methods. Tomography.
12. Advanced methods of imaging in defectoscopy: electron microscopy, scanning probe microscopy.
13. Recapitulation of basic concepts.
