Reading Contemporary Art Theory

A seminar Reading Contemporary Art Theory is focused on close reading of texts from the field of theory of art.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will be able to sumarize key aspects of the text, and analyse them. They will foster their critical thinking and interpretative skills. Students will gain insight into recent discourses of theory of art that help them with contextualizing their own work.

Prerequisites

A knowledge of the history of 20th century art. Awareness of contemporary art practice.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods are based on course orientation - emphasis is placed on individual preparation of students before individual seminars; during the course the lecturer directs the discussion so that they have the opportunity to engage in the discussion to deepen their understanding of the discussed text.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Credits are awarded on the basis of active participation in the seminars and a written essay.

Aims

The seminar aims to offer to students an introduction into selected issues of art theory, and to foster further thinking and discussion on the given topics (i. e. relationship between avant-garden and neo-avant-garde, archival impulse and historiographical turn, socially engaged art, participatory art etc.)
