Structural Detail

Structural detail is one of basic connections between construction and architecture. The structure is a construction here, whose particular parts and elements are put together into the unit, which respects both static and architectonic aspects in general design and also in details. This is a crucial issue for total building interaction. Detail and structure are connected with many functional attachments. As the functional attachments we can mention: effects of internal and external surrounding influences, functionality and aesthetic, static and dynamics of a structure, optimal energy consumption, mutual relationships between details and the unit, technology and feasibility, reliability, economy.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The main result of the course would be the student's ability to solve structural details in a wider context (feasibility, accuracy of design, bearing stability, issues in the field of building physics, etc.) so that they would be structurally correct and functional for a long period.

Prerequisites

Theory of civil engineering´s constructions, drawing of buildings Theory of building construction, drawing of building constructions according to valid standards. Technical and typological principles of building design and particular construction units.
Building Act + executive regulations CSN, DIN, ISO, EN.

Co-requisites

Issues in building physics, stress and structural characteristics, material characteristics, structural conjunctions and solutions, issues in foundation engineering and roofing design of buildings.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Assignment of the individual details with their subsequent production and consultation. Presentation of the details to the study group followed up by discussions and mutual oppositions. Presentation of the assigned seminary work focused on a certain topic. The teaching methods do depend on the way of teaching and are described in article 7 of the Study and Examination Regulations of the BUT.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Altogether it is necessary to actively participate the practices, with parallel consultations and submissions of the assigned work (drawings) according to the schedule of practices, which are then required to be handed in together within the credit week in a prescribed manner. To pass the course, it is necessary to get the credit from practices, to obtain more than 60% of the points in the written exam and pass the oral examination.

Aims

Structural – architectonic detail takes a crucial share in a total level of building. The student solves, under the direction of the tutor, structural details taken over particular project documentation and compiles a seminary work on a given subject. An integral part of the work is a public defence of elected technical solutions.
