an improving of knowledge of the numerical and other methods of the structural mechanics, utilization of software products, an introduction to manuals of available programs, a study and search of literature, a project task and its processing, generation of computer models and an analysis of topical tasks, a discussion about project results

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The result is a bachelor thesis. This is an individual award which corresponds to an individual leadership of thesis supervisor. Contact with the supervisor takes place in the weekly consultations. Student will be able to perform static analysis of structure using appropriate special software including evaluation of stress analysis.


diagrams of the internal forces on a beam, equilibrium, physical and geometrical equations for a beam, the stresses, the internal forces, the deformations and the displacements for a beam, a plane, a plate and a solid, basic of the finite element method, principle of an assessment of building structures


Knowledge of mathematics, physics, statistics and informatics are very beneficial.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations. Individual consultations reprezent teaching. Study activities of students includes entering his own independent work. Work on projects by using advanced software on PC.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Methods of assessment are for this subject specific because it is individual work of student under leading of supervisor resulting in final project. Student must submit the complete bachelor thesis. Sophistication of the work corresponds to the final evaluation by supervisor and opponent.

During this course a student learns to use theoretical knowledge obtained in previous subjects of static orientation for solution of problems in civil engineering practise. The knowledge about basic principles of mechanics and their application in finite elements method will be improved. After finishing the course he will be able to use computational programs based on finite elements method. Students will be skilled in solution comprehensive projects with their aspects like analysis of a task, study of literature and codes, a specifying of loads, a solution and analysis of results, an assessment and a conclusions.
