Mechanical Equipment

FAST-BW003Acad. year: 2018/2019

Mechanisation of work, the importance, deployment and utilisation of machines and mechanical equipment in the production of building materials.
Acquaintance with basic terms – performance, costs, basic structural elements.
In addition, an overview of information concerning machines and equipment for the mining of raw materials, horizontal and vertical transport, the manufacture of concrete and cement. These basic machines and items of mechanical equipment are supplemented by machines and equipment for the recycling, harvesting and processing of wood. The newest methods of controlling construction machines are covered. Also dealt with is the suitability of individual types of machines and equipment, or sets of machines, for a given use.
Emphasis is also placed on taking care in the use of machines and mechanical equipment with regard to the environment.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

This course provides students with a coherent overview of the basic elements of machines, and their use during the preparation and manufacture of building materials. It will introduce students to examples of machines used for different types of activity. Students will gain an overview of the appropriate mechanical equipment needed for mining and quarrying, the transportation and processing of fresh concrete and cement. They will also have basic knowledge regarding machines and equipment for vertical/horizontal transportation and handling, for the processing of building materials and for recycling.
The final area covered is the manufacture of timber-based materials, where students gain information about machines for harvesting and processing wood.
The output of the course is a comprehensive overview of machines and mechanical equipment most commonly used throughout the whole area of the manufacture of building materials, and their packaging and storage.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge regarding the functions of machines, mining and harvesting technology, and the production of building materials.

Co-requisites

Study of parallel subjects is not required.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Tuition takes place via lectures and self-study. Attendance of lectures is recommended.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

In order to complete the subject successfully it is necessary to fulfil the following conditions: a written test must be passed, and a proposal created for a set of machines able to manufacture assigned types of building materials.

Aims

· Providing the students with complete overview of function, principle and application of machinery and equipment in production of building materials. Individual machines from rocks mining, transportation, treatment, homogenisation up to transportation of raw materials into the plant itself are described. The subject deals with all machines for raw material processing in the production of mortars, raw ceramics, light building materials, concrete goods. The stress is laid on automation and robotics application in production of building materials.
