Subject BS06 Hydropedology focuses on interpretation of soil-water relations and their role in the protection of agricultural land. The basic form of teaching are exercises in which students get acquainted with the physical and hydraulic properties of the soil, hydrolimits and infiltration of water into the soil. In use of models in pedology students learn how to gather and analyze the resulting data from the available computer programs RETC (van Genuchten et al., 1991) and Rosetta (Schaap, 2003).
The outcome of the exercise will be a term paper and written test.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students obtain basic knowledge of hydropedology. Student is able to:
- assess the quality of farmed land based on laboratory analyzes of soil hydro-physical properties and hydrolimits,
- evaluate the water infiltration into the soil using the double-ring infiltration method and Minidisk infiltrometer,
- predict the hydraulic characteristics of the soil by pedotransfer functions,
- use available computer programs RETC and Rosetta.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examination.
Excercise - evaluation of measured hydro-physical dates, hydrolimits and water infiltration into the soil, work with software programs RETC and Rosetta, creating a term paper.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

For the successful completion of the course the student must meet the following conditions:
- attendance at seminars,
- assess the quality of agricultural land from selected experimental sites,
- work independently with software programs,
- create a term paper,
- pass a written test.
