Pedology and Irrigation

Soil science in general, pedogenesis (pedogenetic factors and processes). Basic soil properties - physical, mechanical and chemical properties of soils. Hydropedology, soil moisture and soil moisture measurements.
Soil hydrostatics, adsorption, capillarity, swelling and soil water potential including methods of measurement. Principles of determination of irrigation water demand. History and importance of irrigation, reasons of drought, plant and water. Types of irrigatio, evapotranspiration, climatic irrigation. Sprinkle irrigation, irrigation facilities and machines. Micro-irrigation, water quality and treatment. Lawn irrigation (parks, sport turf). Automated irrigation systems.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will gain an overview of water management and irrigation, knowledge of field pedological survey and laboratory analyses, knowledge of relevant standards and design principles for the design of irrigation systems.

Basic knowledge of physics, hydraulics and hydrology

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.
Oral lectures with Power Point presentations. Lecture of invited specialist with presentation of irrigation eqipment and discussion.
Seminars in pedology are aimed at laboratory analyses. During the seminars in irrigation students work on irrigation of given locality.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

For a successful finishing of the subject, student has to:
- be present in seminars,
- work out laboratory protocols and irrigation project
- pass the test in pedology
- pass written and oral exam
- hand over his project and its presentation.
