Effective Reading of Electrotechnical English

The course is focused on efficient reading and reading comprehension, mostly in combination with other skills. Different types of general and professional texts are used, as well as different reading techniques,such as scanning,skinning,intensive reading, and reading for problem solving. Both general and professional vocabulary is enriched.
The course is suitable for the PGS exam and for other exams organized outside the faculty.
It is a one-semester course.

Learning outcomes of the course unit
Students will improve their reading skills (they will become familiar with scanning, skimming, intensive reading, guessing meaning from the context, etc.) , the use of which will develop their comprehension of English texts . By analyzing different kinds of technical and semi-technical texts they will enrich their general and specialized vocabulary.Students will be able to understand, analyze, translate and paraphrase different kinds of specialized professional texts.

Intermediate level of English is requested (BAN4 /XAN4 min.)

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Explanation of the reading strategies, individual reading of texts from the internet or class sets of textbooks, comprehension tasks, vocabulary work, and discussions
Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes
One semester test forms 40% of the course evaluation (40 points maximum and 20 points minimum).
The final exam forms 60% of the course evaluation and shows students´ ability to understand three different types of specialized texts and to analyze, synthetize, paraphrase, organize and reproduce information from them ( 60 points maximum and 30 points minimum).
The course is worth 3 credits.
