Health Ethics

FEKT-AETIAcad. year: 2018/2019

The course deals with an overlap of biomedical ethics, particularly the ethical implications of biotechnology. Technical and biotechnological approach is extended to include humanistic and social dimension. Emphasis is placed on an interdisciplinary approach that is essential discussion on moral dilemmas arising from the development and application of biomedical technologies.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The student:
- Have a basic knowledge of biomedical ethics
- Is able to identify ethically relevant aspects of biomedical technologies
- Is able to apply appropriate bioethical standards
- Is able to discuss the various ethical and social aspects of biomedical technologies
- is capable of critical thinking and reasoning in the field of bioethics.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Credit test.
Case Study.
Credit test is focused on finding knowledge about basic concepts.
Presenting and defending a case study validates the orientation of the selected issues of biomedical ethics, the ability to perceive the context and by argument to justify an opinion.

Course curriculum

The course consists of 13 lectures and 13 follow-up seminars. Lectures indicate to the ethical issues of biomedical and biotechnological practice. Ethical issues mentioned in the lecture and discussed in seminar:
1. Introduction to biomedical ethics.
2. Science - Technology - ethics.
3. Informed consent.
4. Patients' rights.
5. Dealing with health information.
6. Privacy policy in Health Care.
7. Reproductive Medicine.
8. Futile treatment, euthanasia, assisted suicide.
9. Human - the subject of research.
10. Research on animals.
11. Working with biological material of human origin.
12. Human enhancement.
13. Ethical and legal regulation in biomedicine.


The course deals with ethical aspects of biomedical research and practice and provides the students with the general fundamentals of biomedical ethics, including bioethical standards.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Education is compulsory. Properly excused absences can be replaced in consultation with the teacher.
