Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will acquire the basic standards of academic English, will develop a glossary of Czech-English key terminology of their dissertation topic, will prepare a summary of a scientific publication in English, will write a part of research paper according to the IMRAD format in English, and will give an oral presentation of a scientific topic related to their Ph.D. work.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of English at the B1 level according to the CEFR. The course builds on the knowledge acquired in the course Professional Language (OCZ) – English taught in Master degree.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

13 weeks of work in seminars, self-study of scientific texts in English, oral presentation of scientific topics in English. Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

As a part of their exam students submit a Czech-English glossary of key terminology for their Ph.D. work, a written summary of a scientific publication, and an abstract of their Ph.D. work. The oral exam consists of a presentation of their Ph.D. work and a discussion about their participation at conferences and workshops.

1. Introduction. Architectural terminology overview.
2. Urban planning terminology overview. Using specialized dictionaries.
3. Types of research papers and their characteristics. Literature review discussion.
4. Research paper format (IMRAD). Consultation of selected scientific publications.
5. Reading and writing research papers: focus on introduction, methods and materials, results.
6. Reading and writing research papers: focus on discussion and conclusions.
7. Types of abstracts. Reading and writing abstracts of research papers.
8. Consultation of submitted abstracts. Developing lists of key words.
9. Standard format and language of presentation in English.
10. Tips how to present effectively, how to handle questions.
11. Giving short presentations. Conference English.
12. Giving short presentations. Discussion about current conferences and workshops.
13. Consultation of book summary and key words.

Aims

The aim is to consolidate students´ knowledge of professional language gained during their master studies, introducing the standards of academic text in English, standard format of research paper, familiarise them with academic English used in research papers and oral presentations at scientific conferences.
