Workshop - Visual Design I

Practical solutions of basic types of visual design subbmissions. The creative component of work is to design of image representing submitted content at the first. Than it is followed by typographical work and development into practical applications for electronic and print media.
Examples of project themes: "Poster", "Book", "Magazine", "Catalogue", etc.
During the semester, 2-3 exclusive one day tasks on a specific topic are submited.

The course has been created with the support of the OPVK project. "The Studio digital sculpture and new media project", reg. No. CZ.1.07/2.2.00/28.0278, is co-financed by the European Social Fund and the state budget of the Czech Republic.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will learn how to handle the detailed design project. Adjusting of the final resulting work should conform to the real visual design project/commission which includes also implementation of a maquette/mock-up simulating real products.

Prerequisites

Ability to analyze problem, expression of idea in drawing, basic knowledge of composition, color and technologies used in the production of visual communication design. Knowledge of 2D (Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, CorelDraw) graphics applications, 3D modeling and rendering.

Creative work in ateliers.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Graded course-unit credit requirements: attendance at lessons, handing over assigned projects by the deadline in a sufficient quality. Presentation of an elaborated project. Design and the level of presentation of each project are evaluated separately.
Work will incl. source files completely delivered in electronic format, incl. Upload data to a virtual gallery of work.
Resulting evaluation consists of evaluations on projects. In total it will be possible to aquire 100 points. Resulting classification will be defined by the ECTS scale.
If some of the projects are awarded less than half of the maximum pts., final evaluation of the course is "failed".
According to the article No. 13 of Study and Examination Rules of Brno University of Technology ECTS evaluation degree scale is used. If some of the projects are awarded less than 50 pts., final evaluation of the course is "failed". The course is evaluated with the following grades: ECTS EVALUATION DEGREES / PTS. RATING / NUMERIC RATING: A / 100 - 90 / 1 / Excellent; B /89 - 80 / 1,5 / Very good; C / 79 - 70 / 2 / Good; D / 69 - 60 / Satisfactory; E / 59 - 50 / Sufficient; F / 49 - 0 / 4 / Failed.

Aims

Students gain both an overview of the scope of the visual communication design branch and of it most attractive fields, and also of approaches to different types of commissions during processing of tasks.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

The attendance in workshop is controlled. Students have to be present in scheduled hours in the workshop, work on assigned projects and wait for consultation, unless a lecturer gives other individual plan. Students are obliged to inform the lecturer in advance about his/her working-place in the scheduled education time (studio, workshops, modelling room or college dormitory, home, producer etc.) - as absence is not excused without this information. The excuse of absence is possible only due serious reasons such as illness. Unexcused absence may jeopardise accepting a project.
